Persephone was a dangerous shapeshifter who lived in England in the year 1907. She had the ability to change not only her own appearance but also the appearance of someone in close proximity to her. Many times she had gotten out of trouble by swapping appearances with someone. For all practical purposes it was the same thing as swapping bodies. By the time anyone else found out what had happened it was too late, if they found out at all.

To improve her technique, Persephone learned how to disguise herself without magic. This enabled her to wait for the right moment instead of using her energy all at once. Word of her deeds had spread to other shapeshifters. Not wanting the bad reputation she brought them they took it upon themselves to track her down and bring her to justice. After several close calls, she realized she had to leave the country.

Persephone disguised herself as a man and got on a boat headed to the United States. Bernard was just part of the crew who regularly transported cargo and passengers between Europe and North America. He had no idea what was about to happen.

Without warning, Persephone grabbed Bernard and used her natural magical abilities to swap appearances with him. Even the appearance of their clothing was swapped. Persephone then revealed that Bernard was a woman in disguise and was wanted for some crimes back in England.

Bernard was helpless. How could he, or she, prove her innocence if she could not even understand what had happened? As far as they knew, she was Persephone and she had no way of proving otherwise. The real Persephone had no intention of staying on the ship any longer than needed.

Shortly before their arrival in the United States, Peresephone swapped appearances with a teenage girl who was just as bewildered as Bernard. Many days later both of them were able to get their original appearances restored but they were never the same again. Both of them developed a strong fear of strangers.

Persephone left the teenage girl's family with the money she had taken from Bernard. She would find a new place to live. This time she would plan her moves carefully and make sure no one ever found out what she had done.
