Description “Remember your basics, for they are your greatest strength.”

This has been said throughout history in so many ways and variations, and, it is still true today. Of late I have been having some serious art block, my poses I try and create fall apart, or I find myself repeating old lessons, and I could not find out why I could not make any head way.

Then it finally came to me.

I had forgotten my basics. The most core and fundamental aspect of drawing, that without no progress can be made.

Fun little fact about me: throughout my entire schooling carrier, from the lowest grade all the way though collage, I have been at war with my art teachers, professors, and mentors. On a good day we would only chafe at each other’s philosophy and style, and on a bad day we would go toe to toe in a heated debate that would cause other students to promptly vanish, as much as the room permitted.

I can recall several very heated debates over the principles of art, the style, design, and makeup of the composition. How I hated the ‘Golden rule’ or the ‘Principles of the Renaissance painters’ and don’t get me started on ‘Style and cartoon composition’.

All that being said, I never really looked back on my own history until now, only to realize just how many great artistic minds I got to rub shoulders with. I have had the chance to train under renowned cartoonists, art historians of both the Renaissance era and paleo era artists. The later of which I did enjoy, tough we still butted heads a lot. And of course, the basic professors who try and teach you the fundamentals.

The more I look back, the more I realize I was probably the Zuko (Avatar the Last Air Bender) of the class room, angry, impatient, and always demanding to be taught the advanced lessons.

Now, after so many years, I find myself going back and repeating those old exercises that were drilled into me so long ago. Look at the light, the shadows, what are your lines doing, how strong or weak are you making them.

So, for any of my past art professors who may recognize my style and stumble across this, I just wanted to say:

Thank you. Thank you for being patient with me, and for hammering home those basic fundamentals of art.

Oh, and for not flunking me. Even though you did threaten to do so several times.

This piece is a free hand depiction of the image posted by the lovely here on DA. The original piece can be found here: I Don't Play the Viola Please Be Nice to Me So you can see just how much work I have ahead of me.

Some things to note about this piece: Please note the line weight favoring the left side of the model, the shadow depth, and smaller areas of attention around the knees, and elbow, and chest.

If you feel the urge to offer a critique, advice, or anything else, please do as I am putting this up here as a means to help me grow.

Yours,

C.S.

An animator, really? That us a tough field to get into, one of my siblings does so as well. ^^

She’s doing quite well for herself. She now works for a company that produces tv shows for Disney like, The Lion Guard. They’re also the company that did the animation for the Netflix show, Hilda.

O.O Wow that is incredible! The Lion king was one of my favorite films of all time. Animation is no easy field, you must be quite proud of her. ^^

Yes, I am.

She put in a lot of work to become an animator and she's doing quite well in the company she works for. Plus, she enjoys it, which is important.

If you'd like a critique of your work, I can ask her.

I admit it is a very tempting offer, being my own worst critic I admit I feel apprehension about having a professional look at what I do... o.o

Lol Funny how that works. I admit there is something to be said about the artistic style, the feelings it produces, that draws one to the medium.

Been studying that discipline for some time which was why I wanted to try my hand at writing a story along that vein. Lars would have been nice but that can wait for another time.

Well, as they say on the temporal mechanics department: 'There's no time like the present.'

So. Kicking this one into gear - I have something that I think would air you in establishing Mac as a character in the fallout universe. That is, if you are interested? ^^

Also I have been sketching a new character... God help me.

A Nightstalker.

So far she is pretty cute.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Code-Shark In reply to JKnight97 [2019-02-04 02:14:33 +0000 UTC]

Lol that would be a new one on me. The Nightstalkers I know of are vicious half coyote half rattle snake hybrids. They move and hunt in packs, have a insidiously fast acting poison from their fangs, and are devilishly hard to hit do to their speed. Not to mention you have about twenty of these things that swarm attack you, so by the time you get a shot on one, then three more have moved to bite you in your rear. T.T

I am not an artist. So as a judge of your art I can only say if I like it or not.

What I have learned to be is a student.
I will never stop learning.
Even when vetted as fully trained and qualified to teach........I will still be open to learning.

I will break out and re-read old training manuals just to re-enforce the basics. Read new manuals to pick up new bits. Listen to others even younger than me to pick up new ideas.
Never stop learning.

Oh......I do like the composition.

You sir have just stumbled on the greatest pool of wisdom ever conceived of by man kind. And, consequently a topic my professor and I raged over fiercely.

The last art class I took was all about appreciation and analysis. High level but cant remember the number.

Anyways, my thesis paper was an argument that all the 'rules' about critics were bogus, and that the only aspect that could be argued was 'Do you like the piece, yes, no? And why.'

All the rest was just veiled stylistic choices.

I found out a year later that my professor actually enjoyed having these debates with me and thought I was one of her brightest pupils. O.O and here I thought she hated my guts.

Agreed, never ever ever stop. I found, funny thing, is that I literally can not stop creating, if I do I slump into a near coma like state in the couch.

That and I have to create just to be able to go to sleep. The later took me by surprise, but after a lit of experimenting.

You too? Instill have several, very worn manual now, for different fields but I hold onto and review them all the same.

And thank you, I was filled with the urge to remake it into a pose of my own, but resisted and stuck to the exercise. ^^

No one becomes a master on day one.
It is a process of learning and development that takes time.
Improvement of the born with ability.

We are all candles.
We all burn with creativity.
Some burn brightly.
Others just barely.

So very true, of late I fear mine has been burning low. Not for lack there of for ideas, but due to lack of basic anatomy, and, work is getting me a bit down.

One of our best got promoted to a suit, and there is a power gap where she once stood. Alas ther is no one big enough to fill her shoes.

So true.
I am losing several in my agency to retirement.
My Captain, one Lieutenant, and a Sergeant. All three I have worked with for years. Will have to work with new ones. It’s not hard but will have to learn some new personalities.
The saddest is losing a Sgt I worked with for a few years........to cancer. He was diagnosed with the incurable kind. They gave him a few months. He’s just over 45. Retired Army First Sgt. My fitness mentor and close friend.
That sucks the worse.
