‘Go ahead.’ Mr. Ubie urged. ‘I’ve had R&D redo the design, so you will no longer be limited to those bulky spring steel affairs of the past designs.’
Tentatively, Amenii slid off the table and planted her new prosthetics on the floor, giving them a little bounce with her weight. To her surprise they reacted much like her old legs had, her original legs, giving a bit before settling in to take her weight. The grip spray on coating that Ubie had used held the ground underneath her with as much traction as a well cleaned paws. Much smaller than the original models, she found it much easier to stand without the fear of falling face forwards. That was not the only change though, with the recurve design as he had explained it, Ubie had been able to shave the arc down and still keep the spring to her step.

‘Go on, give them a run around the circuit.’ He urged, smiling gesturing to the obstacle course he had set up. The size of a stadium, it looked like something that belonged on the set of Ninja Warriors, or Extreme Parcor, and Amenii loved it. Drawing in a deep breath she began a slow shaky walk, each step allowing her to grow in confidence, and with it her speed. Walking, jogging, running, sprinting, her new legs carried her faster and further than anything her old ones had.

With ease she vaulted over the first wall, and was half way through the second even higher one when the realization of the thought occurred to her, her old legs. When had she started to think of the flesh she had lost that night as being her old legs? Crouching she put a burst of effort into the third jump catapulting herself up and over the barrier, even managing to work a back flip at her arc just to show off.

Already moving on the next series of tests, she angled herself on inclines, climbed walls, stairs of every kind, skittered on loose gravel, dirt, and then splashed through the water portion of the course. By the time she finished the circuit, she was breathing heavily, chest heaving, as she mopped sweat from her brow. Her sports bra and shorts were soaked through with sweat while her face was a mass of tiny beads that glistened on her fur.

‘Well, how did they handle?’ Mr. Ubie asked smiling a knowing smile. He already knew, he had been watching her progress along with the tecs to implement future improvements.

‘They…’ Amenii breathed, ‘They were amazing. Can I take these home with me?’

For a moment she was sure Ubie would politely inform her that she was wearing the labs only prototype and that they would need it back, but, maybe too he saw her reaction and changed his mind. Much to the aggravation of the R&D department who would have to build another from scratch.

‘Go ahead,’ He smiled. ‘Their yours. Consider them, and early birthday present.’

‘Thank you.’ Amenii rushed over to hug him, wrapping her arms around the panther’s waist. ‘Thank you.’

It was then she noticed the tablet sitting on the desk behind him, and a design that gave her pause. It looked like-

‘Ah.’ Mr. Ubie snatched up the tablet. ‘Must not pry my little progeny, that design is not yet ready and I do not want to get your hopes up prematurely.’

Still, Amenii could not help but feel her heart race, the design was one that looked like a recreation of a rabbits lower legs.
