Description Though it was only the third lap, Amenii had to stop. The new prosthetics Ubiee’s design team had come up with were powerful, and with the she hand been able to scale distances that no other rabbit had dreamed about.

At a full sprint, she could crest just over fourteen feet, and her leaps seldom fell under twenty.

Yet, there was one design flaw.

The harness that held the modifications to her shortened legs chafed. And chafed bad. To keep the legs from flying off she had to be fitted with a special harness. At first she thought it was something that was going to be used to climb in, but it was explained to her that the design was to absorb the shock of her landings.

Even with the harness’s rigid structure gripping her legs she still felt the impact of each landing, and to her embarrassment she had screamed like a child the first time she made a jump.

Her heart was still fluttering and not just from the exertion of the obstacle course, it had been like flying, she reflected, gliding through the air on metal legs. It was just the landings she feared, with each landing, her momentum carried her higher and higher, to the point she was becoming afraid to land.

Rather than let her fears tear her new found confidence to piece and aim for the padded mats set up as a safe zone, for the specific purpose of such an emergency, she had slowed her stride. And with great effort, she managed to reign in her new legs.

She had no sooner sat on one of the benches surrounding the floor when Mr. Ubiee’s voice came from behind her.

‘That was quite an impressive display of acrobatics.’ His voice was a quite purr, ‘No back flips, but for the first trial run of the High Jump model, you did far beyond expectations.’

Amenii Almost jumped off of her seat.

How did he do that?

Despite her large ears, he still could sneak up on her, and in full dress to! Even Nera had to strip down to avoid the shuffling sound of fabric to hide her approach.

‘Thank you.’ She managed, smiling up at him. She had not forgotten his generous offer, and though she was only employed as a temporary higher on, pending reinstatement at the ZPD, he had made it clear his interest in offering her an exclusive contract.

‘Are there any design issues that you ran across in your field test?’

He had that to, a strange sixth sense that told him what she was thinking, it lent him a charming air at times, and at others, like now, it just came off as supernatural.

‘Just one…’

‘Only, one?’ He arched an eyebrow.

Damn, he was good, or was she just that easy to read.

‘Well, the landings are a little rough, it is easy to lose control…’ She drew in breath, ‘But what the biggest issue is, well…’

Amenii blushed as she looked down at the harness the cupped her hips to thigh.

‘It chafes.’ She blurted out. ‘A lot!’

Ubiee looked at her with calculating eyes, then threw his head back and roared with laughter, and after a while Amenii found herself laughing too.

Well she just got off the track, testing out a new pair of legs. Clearly the engines never took comfort into consideration.

Well that can be traced back to the begining of her story, way back in the gallery.

In a nut shell, there was a traumatic accident, and not even Amenii remembers what happened... O.O

So if you watched "Dolphin's Tale", this was the same issue that Winter, the dolphin who's tail had to be amputated, encountered when they gave her a prosthetic limb/tail. She kept refusing it until they were able to find a sleeve that she felt comfortable in. Given that Zootopia is a much more advanced society than ours, this should never have been an issue. Also, are you aware of the advances in cybernetics where they are able to use the nerve endings in the stump to connect and control the artificial arm/hand/leg?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Code-Shark In reply to JKnight97 [2017-01-03 19:09:37 +0000 UTC]

I did not, i recall reading about 3d printed limbs, but not the nerve endings, I had thought that technology was still unavailable.

JKnight97 In reply to Code-Shark [2017-01-04 02:18:51 +0000 UTC]

It was featured in NBC I think where they showed that by attaching the nerve endings to the prosthetic limb, such as a hand, the user is able to control the strength of the grasp, almost as if they had a real hand. It was an interesting feature. I found an article online: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetec…

The science is called neuroprosthetics.

Code-Shark In reply to JKnight97 [2017-01-08 02:00:41 +0000 UTC]

Very cool, this is awesome.

So, here's something I want you to ponder: If we can print muscles, connect nerve endings, and create new prosthetic bones. So, how much human body parts can be lost, before one stops being human?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JKnight97 In reply to Code-Shark [2017-01-08 06:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Depends on what your definition of a human is. The purists will say the moment you add something foreign to the body, i.e. dental fillings, you're not human anymore because you are less than what you started with. They will then only accept the self-healers, i.e., Deadpool, Wolverine, Hulk and Sabretooth (just to name a few) as pure humans. On the other hand, there will be others who ask what is it that truly makes us human? The answer would be the soul. That is why, Alex Murphy of the RoboCop series, even though only has 10-30% of his human body left, still considers himself as a human albeit a cyborg.

Code-Shark In reply to JKnight97 [2017-01-11 16:58:14 +0000 UTC]

I follow, so now for the heat of the debate: step onto a flimsy limb here- the human brain is like a super computer, so if we can create parts of the brain to replace that original matter, how much braim can you lose, before you lose your humanity?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JKnight97 In reply to Code-Shark [2017-01-11 17:02:04 +0000 UTC]

Ooohhh...slippery slope there. Why stop at replacing parts of the brain? What about just transferring the conscious mind to a robotic shell? There was a movie made about this. Or, what if a machine gains AI? Would you consider it human or human-like?

I suspect that the second such a computer comes into existence, we will be facing something similar to Judgement Day.

Chappie

It was a very good indie film about the inventor relying in the end on his invention to save him

The name is familiar, I may have seen a few pieces of the film.

I will have to seek it out, anything like the works of Isaac Asimov?

JKnight97 In reply to Code-Shark [2017-01-12 14:06:27 +0000 UTC]

I've read most of Isaac Asmov's books but his was more the type the robots have immediate cognitive abilities but are just that...machines. They were programmed and followed the 3 Laws of Robotics. Chappie was more like he was born so he was like a child but matured very quickly.
