Description
Over at the Internet Movie Database, I noticed a lot of people hating Michonne's appearance in the final episode of this season, saying that her appearance was "farfetched" and it didn't match the show. Well, let me tell you something: Michonne's appearance is no more farfetched than the zombies that are featured throughout the show, no more farfetched as the CDC storyline, no more farfetched than Rick and Shane killing zombies with pocket knifes without any effort getting it in and out (which occurred a few episodes back). And the fact that the show is based on a comic book series about zombies proves how much farfetched the whole show is, thus your argument is completely incorrect. And the fact you say, "this show takes pride in realism" is actually even more ironic. Why? Because if the show were "realistic" or had a sense of "realism", there'd be no zombies and no zombie apocalypse (and thus no reason for a show). After thinking on it a while, I came to realize why it is you hate her. It isn't because of her first appearance being farfetched (which was voted as the most badass/memorable moment in the show in the Viewer's Poll taken during "The Talking Dead"). So, here is my overall response.

She uses a katana & keeps 2 zombies sans arms & lower jaws as " pets ". What's not to like ? I'm looking forward to the new season.
This looks like photography / photoshop, correct ?

I haven't read the volume in which she is first featured yet (which is Volume 4. I'm up to Volume 3), but I know of Michonne and her level of being a bad-ass (which compared to any of the other characters in the show, places her in the top level).

She's such a badass! I just needed THAT kind of chick in this show, especially that women in TWD are for cooking, screaming and dying :/

Well, this image was primarily in response to a lot of the negative posts about Michonne showing up on the show and the way she does too. Like I said, many say her arrival is unrealistic. I just came to the logical conclusion that they hate her because she's more badass than Rick, Shane and Daryl combined, and she proved it in five seconds instead of taking a season and a half to do so (like what Rick, Shane and Daryl each had to do).
Me, I agree with you. It's just bionafied badass.

I have one word : "FANGIRLS". That's really stupid to hate character for such a reason. For me, nothing changed about Rick, Shane or Daryl - I still like them very much, but I'm happy that there is a woman tough enough to be like them.
Now I'm looking forward for third season, but probably I will have to read comic book, because waiting will kill me

Those who hate Michonne are those who only love the TV show part of the Walking Dead family. Those who followed the graphic novel will know why the show is floundering (in my opinion). Without her sneak preview in the season finale, I would have abandoned the show entirely. With her, now I am interested in seeing what happens

According to the comics, Michonne had not only cut their lower arms off (which you can see in the picture), but she also cut off their lower jaws off (some people also think she may have take out their eyes and poked out their ear drums). So, as a result, there was no way for them to grab her and bite her. But it's also been stated by Michonne that after doing so, they eventually just gave up and followed her around when she lead them.

I know how you feel about Sophia and Dale (Dale's could have been avoided if AMC hadn't been pocketing the money that was needed for the production, and if they hadn't fired Frank Darabont, since the actor who plays Dale is a personal friend of Darabont and signed up for the role of Dale because of him). I know what you mean about Carl killing Shane (as he would have learned the same lesson as he did), but doing it like this also shows that he's growing up and that he's not afraid to take down a Walker, even if it was once someone he knew. And I think Tyreese is T-Dog in the show (it may not be exact, but then again, Andrea isn't exactly the same as she was in the comic).

I really hope T-dog isnt Tyreese... The whole assisted suicide thing with his son was a huge thing in the comics... I just dont see how they could leave something like that out.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
codebreaker2001 In reply to IFlaberGastedI [2012-03-24 17:04:10 +0000 UTC]
Actually, Tyreese doesn't have a son and doesn't assist in his suicide. He has a daughter and her boyfriend was with her. After they had sex, they had a suicide pact in which they were going to shoot each other at the same time. The boyfriend squeezed his trigger too fast and shot her and killed her. Rick and Tyreese came in, saw his daughter dead and Tyreese killed the boyfriend with his bare hands. His daughter resurrected within only a few minutes, which was the clue that Rick got that no matter how you died, bitten or not, you came back.
When it comes to show, they added stuff, have left some out, and have even changed a lot more of it. Something that works well in the comic may not translate as much into the show. The whole events of the Wilshire Estates were cut (and I mean finding it, the group attempting to move in and then discovering is full of zombies, and their frantic escape), only to be briefly seen in one scene as a part of the "find Sofia" search.

I've been waiting for her to appear since the show started. About 84 or 85 issues into the comic (need to get more). Not going to spoil anything here, but she's my favourite character with Andrea from the comics. And already in the show she's right there with Andrea and Daryl.
Hope she doesn't end up how she does when she crosses paths with the other new person in series 3...not sure they could air that on tv, although if I recall it's not directly shown, just referred to?
But yeah, such as awesome entrance!

What has Andrea done as far as the tv show goes, that makes her on par with how awesome you say Michonne is going to be and how great we already know Daryl to be?
By my count she wanted to show how tough she was and shot Daryl in the head.
Then she wanted to show how tough she was (or to be fair maybe she wanted to practice) when she shot a bunch on zombies when they we standing next to a car and her and shane should have been escaping.
I will give you that the thing with the scyth was cool but I feel like everyone who loves Andrea read the comics and everyone who hates her just watched the TV show.

When she had the argument with Lori and how she stood up to her, and her general attitude. Also the last episode of series 2, how far she pushed herself to survive, compared to the time she wasn't even sure she wanted to live. But yeah, she hasn't put herself on par to be fair, my love for the comic version bias'd my opinion a bit :L
Yeah that was reckless. She could have hit anyone else, and she couldn't see the target clearly, which made that an awful decision. It did hint at her accuracy with a rifle which is amazing in the comic though (not defending near killing Daryl btw!)
I think that was just the moment the switch went and she realised she could help defend the group which she wanted to do, plus being in the zone she didn't think to escape for a bit, just to adapt to it? But again true, didn't really dent the walkers and they could have escaped.
I'll give you that, I love her from the comics, but I don't think I'd hate her if I just watched the show. I like her attitude (wanting to help keep everyone safe), how she stands up to Lori, how her character changes various times and more, but I do agree, she may be the biggest example of that as well - Comic love/hate, show hate/love switching as well?

If you mean what the guy did to her, from what I've read online, they only showed a closed door when it came to what he did to her, while her retaliation was shown in the comic in all its bloody glory. I could very well be wrong.
But I agree, it was an awesome entrance. And it's awesome because that it clearly established how bad-ass she is from the get-go, while it took Rick, Shane and even Daryl about a Season and a half just to establish their bad-assary (Rick's moment is in Season 2 where he takes out two men in a gunslinger style, Shane's {despite how much I disagree with what he did} was ripping the band-aid off of Hershel's denial and "taking charge" at the barn. Daryl's bad-assary reveal was the entire episode "Chupacabra", even if it was a bit over-the-top in hinesight).

Of course she's the most badass character in the show (and in the comics as well), I think she's going to earn a special place in my heart in the show just as she does in the comic. You know, I love Daryl, like Rick and Shane a lot too, but these comparasions that people make...they will really get people nowhere!

clearly everyone who posted here has read the comic or have been informed about the character. Try to imagine those 5 seconds being your only experience of her. I think the problem comes from the big dramatic not revealing her face part. People in real life don't make dramatic entrances and hold poses like that. That is why people think it felt out of place.
O and about people criticizing the realism of a zombie tv show. The whole premise of the show is that everything in the world is the same except there are zombies..o and they have never heard of zombies. So women and men are the same kids are the same all that. So if a character acted unrealistically wouldn't that be a problem regardless of zombies? I will admit I am a hater....I hate all these pretty, skinny, 115lb women who we are supposed to buy that they are so tough when I don't know a single woman who when put in a dangerous situation would act like that....and still be pretty skinny and 115lbs. Think of the tough male characters. The two cops are the toughest that make sense right? Dealing with badguys all the time firearm training. What doesn't make sense is the former lawyer picking up a gun and in the span of a week becoming betty badass. And it isn't a male vs female thing look at glen, fights when he has to survive and cracks under pressure that is a realistic average 20 something pizza delivering male character.
Making these female characters too tough for no reason other than "I am woman hear me roar" or for the usual nerd porn sexy badass chic is what I think drags this show down, that and the fact that lori makes no sense on any character level or intellectual level.
Back to the original point they hate her because her entrance was cartoonish when we are watching a gritty "realistic" drama.

I get that. But their argument doesn't make sense in the context of the show, especially when zombies aren't real and most of the zombie kills aren't even possible in real life (such as Rick and Shane killing zombies with a pocket knife when in reality the blade would have been impossible to insert and just as impossible to pull back out), a lot of situations (such as Daryl Dixon's bad day in "Chupacabra", where he falls down a hill, gets an arrow stuck through him, tries to climb out, falls back down again, takes out two zombies, one of them using the arrow that is stuck through him, climbs back out again, gets shot at by Andrea and is back on his feet next week), not to mention that Rick manages to survive a full month in a coma, in bed and manages to walk out when he should have had muscle atrophy due to being in bed for a full month without any exercises and is hydrated with a drip drip bag (which only lasts for at most a two day period). They might as well not have used zombies and done a show about people surviving a pandemic if people wanted something "realistic." As far as I'm concerned, the show is depicting the world presented in the comic, and with all the "farfetched" and "unrealistic" moments of the show in the past two seasons, Michonne's arrival does not stand out.

All good points. I can't argue with your logic. Don't get me wrong I had a problem with the knife thing too just because there are zombies doesn't mean the laws of physics cease to exist. It was like he was stabbing a cantaloupe, you can blame budget cuts or osteoporosis. And the coma thing, I don't think they ever explicitly stated how long, so I try to ignore it but again that is a good point.
HaHa and Good point about Daryl. I really like Daryl so I am biased but I see struggling through pain as more realistic than becoming sniper qualified over night.
I have a problem with all the things you listed, well except Daryl overcoming pain because anyone has the potential to do that just look at that guy who cut off his own arm when he was trapped under a boulder.
I do have problem with how Daryl is written into the show, they kind of just throw him in like how he took care of Dale in the end. All the problems I have with the show could be solved by better or at least more careful writing.
My dislike for Andrea at its core is not because of her being a tough non domestic woman it is because her abilities define her not her personality. If you asked someone to describe her they would say something like "shes the tough blonde that can shoot." With tough meaning unlikable. She is one dimensional.
I was explaining why some people might have hated the Michonne entrance, I don't like the idea of Michonne not because it was unrealistic but because I have never seen a tv show that did a believable female combatant character(Without super powers)
Which is why I feel bad for you. Clearly you really like the Michonne character and they are going to ruin her, in your eyes by making her not live up to the comics, and In my eyes due to bad writing. I can already guess that in the end instead of being Michone!!!!!! COMPLEX AND UNIQUE CHARACTER!!!(Which is most what makes a character believable) We will get Michonne...Black woman with sword. From what I can tell that is what they already did to andrea. Again I haven't read the comics but does that just about sum up what they did with Andrea? Turned her into blonde woman with gun?

Well, Michonne doesn't have superpowers. She was just plain lucky to have taken fencing when she was in college and that her next door neighbor's kid had a samurai sword collection that included a vintage (and truly real) one. But to me, the issue is the fact that her arrival in the show fits the context of the show, and is no more farfetched or impossible as most of what we've seen in the two seasons. After all, this is a TV show based on a comic book, and it's about zombies. And Michonne should be given a chance on the show before being criticized the way people have been. And frankly, Michonne's more in-tune with how to survive in the world portrayed in the comics and the show (she doesn't use guns because they're loud, which draws attention, AND that eventually, they run out of ammo. A samurai sword (a true samurai sword circa WWII on back, not the decorative find at a flea market aluminum blade one), a machete, a baseball bat, a crowbar, or any kind of big bladed tool or heavy blunt melee weapon is the best weapon to have, because it can kick ass, take names and does it silently).
She's one of the best characters in the comics. And I'm betting that when Season 3 comes out, people are going to see that her being with the group is important (especially with the fact they're about to meet the Governor).

Now I am just mad at the show overall Lori is the most poorly written character I have ever seen. The budget is cut so we rarely ever see zombies anymore and when we do everyone is an expert marksmen to save money on special effects, carl is a completely annoying action stopper. On the plus side we have "evil" rick, this is no longer an democracy its a Ricktotarship stuff but for me its too little too late. After talking with you I realize I like the idea of The walking dead but not the actual show. They are afraid they will run out of ideas so they drag things out like with Sophia, what a waste of time, I hope for you michonne is awesome but I just now decided to stop with the show all together.
