codebreaker2001 — To the Viewers of the Show Who Hate Michonne

Description Over at the Internet Movie Database, I noticed a lot of people hating Michonne's appearance in the final episode of this season, saying that her appearance was "farfetched" and it didn't match the show. Well, let me tell you something: Michonne's appearance is no more farfetched than the zombies that are featured throughout the show, no more farfetched as the CDC storyline, no more farfetched than Rick and Shane killing zombies with pocket knifes without any effort getting it in and out (which occurred a few episodes back). And the fact that the show is based on a comic book series about zombies proves how much farfetched the whole show is, thus your argument is completely incorrect. And the fact you say, "this show takes pride in realism" is actually even more ironic. Why? Because if the show were "realistic" or had a sense of "realism", there'd be no zombies and no zombie apocalypse (and thus no reason for a show).

After thinking on it a while, I came to realize why it is you hate her. It isn't because of her first appearance being farfetched (which was voted as the most badass/memorable moment in the show in the Viewer's Poll taken during "The Talking Dead"). So, here is my overall response.

I'm sorry if my comments have swayed you from watching the show any further, I swear it was not my intention to do so. Maybe at least give Season 3 a chance by watching a couple of episodes and seeing if maybe it's worth continuing. Whenever I recommend the TV show of "Battlestar Galactica" (the recent one), I normally suggest that they watch the mini-series and the first episode of the show, and if they find it interesting, then continue to watch on an episode-by-episode basis (and if you feel that it's not worth it after two episodes, then you're welcome to not watch). I'll make the same recommendation to you for Season 3. Let's just play by ear and see where things go.

Don't worry about it, if anything you have gotten me into the comic, which is so far so good. Discussing the walking dead with you made me realize that it mostly annoys me, except for the season 2 finale which was great. Maybe I will stop watching tv dramas all together because they just make me mad in the end.. like lost, jericho(being cancelled), the black Donnelly's(being cancelled),firefly(Being cancelled), heroes, sons of anarchy, deadwood(nothing ever happened), although I do like shows like dexter and justified and breaking bad, but dexter hasn't ended so who know how it will turn out.

I find myself torn because I know for a fact that there are 10 or more books out there with more satisfying stories, not to mention tons of manga and manwha that are good because they end on purpose, you ever notice how tv dramas start with a great idea and then are either killed or live long enough for the viewer to realize that the writer had no clue where they were going with this, Like lost and heroes.

Funny you should mention BSG, if a friend watches an episode from the 2nd or 3rd season with me they are confused and don't get it but if they watch from season one episode one with me they tend to like it, it sucks you in if you watch it in order.

Just want to say that I appreciate being able to disagree with someone on the internet without it ending with "Well F@#$ you" or "fine then just don't watch it,troll" I never tell someone that because if enough people stop watching your show get cancelled. Thanks for the well thought out points and now I think I am going to go watch some BSG, which until now I had forgotten about.

I know what you mean. I'm still ticked off at SyFy (seriously, what a lame name and a good way to alienate the very audience that made the channel big in the first place) for canceling "Farscape" after it had been promised a Season 5 to wrap up all the storylines (I was a part of the "Save Farscape" campaign, and I am glad that we managed to get the mini-series, even though it still hasn't wrapped up all the stories). But I agree, some shows just go off an edge of a cliff because of poor writing while others are cut off before their prime.

The funny thing about BSG, it was an episode in Season 2 that got me into watching the series.

But I agree with you. But episodic TV shows slowly fall flat, often leaving good storytelling in novels and comic books (and sometimes in movies, and vice-versa).

I'm sorry you're not going to watching the show anymore. But I always try to be as respectful of others online (my motto is that I'll treat you with respect as long as you do likewise to me). You're very much welcome about the points. Most of the time I tend to write something out, but for some reason people often don't understand it and I end up going back and try to clarify what I was saying even more. I guess it's often my phrasing. But I'm glad to have this discussion with you.

I agree with most of what you're saying, and I can make allowances for the 115 lb women being good looking since handsome/pretty people helps the ratings and thus the longevity of the series. I really don't have a problem with Michonne, YET, provided they can plausibly explain those tethered walkers and their docile behavior. My biggest gripe right now is the "everybody has it" story line. That is sensless and impossible. It's too big a stretch to imagine a virus that has a 100% mortality rate if aquired by bite, but if aquired otherwise it simply lies dormant and symptomless until a person dies by some other means.

Also, the reason why the zombies that she's toting with her don't attack her because she cut their arms off, cut their lower jaws off, and (from what I've read, some sources state that she also poked out their eardrums and their eyes) they stopped attacking her and just followed her around. I mean, as a zombie with no way to grab people and bite into them, what can you really do?

codebreaker2001 In reply to RonnyCorona [2012-03-24 04:16:59 +0000 UTC]

The virus comes from the comic itself. In fact, it's not out of the realm of possibility of people carrying it and not show symptoms. A great example of it is Typhoid Mary, who infected other people with Typhoid and was completely unaware she was infected because she showed no symptoms. She had it because her mother contracted it when she was pregnant with her, and she grew up with it, and when she eventually died, an autopsy was performed on Mary, showing that her gallbladder (I think) was completely packed with it. It's not out of the realm of possibility that all of them may have it, it affecting some and it not affecting others.

Yea with a virus so contagious and so extreme I'm not surprised that they are all infected. I mean come on they've all had zombie blood splatted on them. Lol I wouldn't be surprised if the series ended with the virus becoming airborne. Also the fact that about some people not thinking Michonne isnt realistic. I mean come on if you were trapped in a zombie apocalypse for idk how long of course you would go to extremes and do whatever it takes to survive. I mean in the 1st season Rick and the other rubbed blood and guts all over their bodies to hide their scent from the zombies to escape the city. So yes Michonne's not your typical character but she is realistic for what they are going through.

Funny you mention all of that. The same argument has been applied to the characters of the "Left 4 Dead" games, which due to "The Sacrifice" comic, it says that the characters are all infected and are carriers of the Infection, despite the fact that there is never any proof provided in the games (every character that they've encountered that turned into zombies were bitten before even interacting with the survivors, and one set had prolonged exposure to the group for hours and didn't show any sign of being infected) and that in the comic, the doctor took blood samples and assumed they were carriers, but never got to test the blood and confirm they were due to a military coup that lead to a Horde being attracted to the base they were at. Honestly, I don't think the characters of the "Left 4 Dead" games are infected (because that ruins the whole "epic heroes surviving a zombie movie" aspect, changing the characters into involuntary villains).

But, in the context of "The Walking Dead", it works better because everyone is infected and there are no humans walking around who can be potentially infected by Rick and company in the world that they are in now. It doesn't make them involuntary villains.

If there was a cure it must be pretty strong and rare. And if Lori is pregnant I wonder if her baby will come out with any deformities. Because since Lori is infected and rick or shane whoever her dad is, is infected too, so is the baby. Lol it better not be like in Dawn of the Dead....XD

codebreaker2001 In reply to bleuberry333 [2012-03-24 19:40:44 +0000 UTC]

In the comics, the baby was born as normal human baby. For the show, it's hard to say, especially since Lori did try to take next day pills (even though she says she threw them up, there's a good chance that a couple of them didn't come up and the baby may have some sort of neurological problems for the child).

**TV Spoilers**
True that really did feel like they made up the "everyone is infected thing" so they could kill shane twice father son style.
Well they never said virus but I get what you mean, whatever it is, makes no sense that bites mean death and scratches or drinking blood means going about your business.

Michonne is the one character I have been waiting for the show to introduce and when they did; I screamed for joy! Those who hate her are basing that on the what.... five seconds she was shown. So, I say shut your mouths and just watch the show. You will learn to love her and if you still don't after they actually show her personality then you will have a vaild reason to complain. Not just the fact that she wields a sword and has two walkers in chains.

Wat? Who hates Michonne for having like five seconds of screen time. Lol.
Daryl is always going to be my favorite-- no matter what-- but I'm not going to hate against her for randomly chopping a head off a walker.

Maybe they hate her because they wanted Andrea to die or something. Haha.

Like I said, some people at the Internet Movie Database hates her appearance in the episode because her appearance (they say) is "farfetched" and "takes away the realism of the show." Honestly, I think they don't get the fact they're watching a TV show based on a comic book, and both features zombies.

That the subject matter is the impossible (zombies)is irrelevant to those of us who require AND admire a writers effort to make sure every other aspect is realistic and plausible. When something is jarringly out of place it intrudes on our suspension of disbelief and shows a certain amount of laziness and/or lack of creativity on the writers part. BUT that really doesn't apply to this new character or the manner of her appearance. Not yet anyway. As long as the walkers attached to her are given a plausible reason for being there and for not attacking her (I know they have no limbs or mouth, but "they" don't)then even that is okay. That she has a sword is logical to the point that I waonder how come no one else does.

Michonne is the whole reason why season 3 will be unreal!, I'm British so I've just literally finished watching the episode, and my jaw almost broke my desk when it dropped. If anyone was a true TWD fan, they would of read the comics and would of exploded with joy at her arrival in the show, not comment on stupid things like "she looks like a Jedi" or "why are the two zombies just standing there"...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

codebreaker2001 In reply to Micky009 [2012-03-20 01:04:03 +0000 UTC]

I know. That's why I made the image, because of the fact that Michonne is one of the well known characters of the show. And even Frank Darabont wanted to bring Michonne and the Governor into the mix of the show. What better way to bring Michonne into the mix than to introduce her the same way we see in the comic? Granted, it's not exactly the same way (since they killed off Otis in the show), but what better way for Michonne to prove how bad-ass she is just by saving Andrea when her chips were down and odds were against her?

So, I agree you, those that have seen Michonne just needs to give her a chance. They obviously don't know cool and badass the character is. Give her a chance, and she may not let you down.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Antauron [2012-03-19 20:28:29 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why her arrival is so badly criticised. The moment I saw the Katana sweep through the walkers neck I gave the hugest grin
Her appearence here is no different from how she looks in her first comic appearence. Her arrival was timed perfectly and begins the relationship between her and Andrea, whom, having established herself as a bit of a bad girl might take some conflict over Michonne's prowess.
And if we assume Daryl being Tyreese's stand in, then there will be a nice bit of drama
From the offset She is one hell of a character to the story, and if people hate her, then tough, she's a fighter
I love her character, and I am looking forward to Season 3 when we get it in October

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I loved her appearance, but there are users over at the Internet Movie Database that hate her arrival because they say her appearance is farfetched and takes the show away from the "realistic tone" of the show, which makes no sense because of the show was realistic and her appearance was farfetched, there'd be no zombies on the show, it wouldn't be called "The Walking Dead" and it wouldn't be the same story at all.

I too, can't wait for October.
