I'm not sure it ever was. The song is meant as more of a metaphor or an escape than a real place. The middle left panel is meant to be how Zebes actually looks.
It is kinda ugly and creepy, but it's at least mostly canon. I think. Well, she's never had cyborg parts on the outside in canon, but I think it kind of makes sense.
