Depending on which canon you're going for.
In one canon, Ismond is another species altogether. In that canon he's a magic tutor.
In the demon canon, he's a noble's son and has no job at all.

It doesn't really matter which canon this is, because he looks the same in both. Honestly, I'm just not sure which one it is. *Fails* XD
Again the canons are a bit different as to how they met.
In *DaniTheSleepyHead 's canon, where Ismond is an alien, he sensed that something 'wasn't quite right' about Keigler, threatened his life, and then...well, when Drake didn't end up being a threat they ended up being good friends. Ismond was such a nice, understanding guy that Drake couldn't help himself, and things just budded off from there.
In the demon canon, Mr. K was asked by his boss, Edgar, to go 'negotiate' with the nobles that lived near Ismond's family. Unfortunately for Drake, he went to the wrong mansion and ended up mistaking Ismond for a human butler being enslaved by a demon family. He promised that he'd give Ismond a taste of a freedom, and because Ismond felt caged in (despite the fact that he was actually just a demon with an overly-cushy lifestyle), he actually agreed to go with Drake, and even wanted to of his own free will.

Drake isn't particularly open about his sexuality, particularly because his Dad was kind of "eh" about the whole thing.
He doesn't really think he should be ashamed or anything, but he can't really help but have some hesitance in talking about it with other people.
Hence why most people just see him as having an ambiguous orientation.
