Day 3 - Assignment 4 - Earthbound Pegasi

Aoide sighed as she took a swig from her water flask, she was out here along with the other Lawmen to see if they could find those circus horses that had gotten lose. Earthbound Pegasi, she shook her head, back home in Wyoming they had Pegasi, quite a few. Switch lipped at some sage brush, waiting for Aoide to signal her to head out. The woman was waiting for Toi to circle back to tell her he had spotted a horse, she had worked out a long time ago with the large eagle how to search for things. It was easier to find lost people with an eye in the sky in the middle of a Northern winter. She had seen several other riders catch quite a few of the horses but she had ventured farther out to find any stragglers. A familiar screech caught her attention and she looked up to see Toi circling on a thermal above her. “Well Switch, time to head out.”

It wasn’t long before Aoide spotted the brilliant white Arabian stallion grazing on a patch of grass in a hollow. The sound of the pebbles knocked aside by Switch’s hooves alerted the stallion and he looked up at the pair. The woman could almost see him go, ‘NO I don’t want to go back, I like being free.’ Before he turned and bolted. Cursing in several languages she leaned forward and Switch broke into a gallop after the fleeing Arabian. She pulled a halter rope from her saddle horn she readied the clip to snap onto the Arabian’s harness. She wanted to keep him close and well with those feathers on top of his head and the fixed reins on the harness she didn’t trust a lasso just to slip off. They raced down the canyon, Switch would last longer than the Arabian would on this rough ground, she was a mountain horse. And soon enough they pair were pulling up alongside the stallion.

That was when he kicked, Aoide saw his hindquarter’s bunch but she couldn’t react before his hooves connected solidly with her side and Switch’s shoulder. The fire and pain that exploded in her left side told the woman that she most likely now had at least one broken rib. Switch squealed and stumbled before getting back to her stride abet with a limp. There was no way they would catch the stallion now. Switch was too important to Aoide to let the mare go lame while chasing some Damned Earthbound Pegasus. She had forgotten about Toi and with a screech the eagle swooped down in front of the stallion and he screamed and reared sliding on the sand of the canyon floor. He turned to bolt again but Aoide was close enough to snap the halter rope onto his reins and tie the free end around a sturdy tree.

She let the stallion kick himself to practical exhaustion before she got near him again. Her side was on fire but she used the bruise balm she carried with her on the hoof shaped bloody mark on Switch’s shoulder. She didn’t make a noise as Aoide made sure that the balm was in the injury. When the stallion’s head drooped as much as his reins would allow Aoide nudged Switch over to him and collected the halter rope. She shot him a glare before leading the way back to the circus camp, wheezing slightly from the pain in her chest. Even with her dark skin she showed paleness from the pain that spiked through her with each breath. Damned Horse.

Aoide is less than a happy camper right now, with two broken ribs and very bad bruising she'll be in plenty of pain. She will probably be one of the last riders in, and she won't be very talkative. Switch is limping but her hurts aren't as bad as they could have been.
