Description
When I lived in Virginia, I read a book by John Gardner called Grendel. Basically, it's the story of Beowulf from the perspective of Grendel, the rampaging monster. It plays on the human element of Grendel that's not emphasized in the orginal story, and, without sounding like an emo kid, I identified with that character, and still do. So I often draw female sort-of-Grendels as representations of myself.I highly recommend that book, if you haven't read it.
This was done with a Pilot Precise rollerball pen. And my hand REALLY hurts.

Wow I love this. and hey your not really alone dude Grendel is one of my favorite novels mostly I could also identify with grendel in the story well. I drew a really crude pen sketch of my interpertation of him in my sort of style but he looks kind a cartoony and reptalian

I'm really getting into that book right now. It's rather counter-intuitive, though, to try to represent Grendel in a community like DeviantArt, which almost perfectly emulates the qualities of the Hrothgar society for which Grendel felt such contempt. Oh, look at me, babbling like a conceited moron again. How fitting.

I have read it, and I loved it.
This is a very interesting take on Grendel. There is something about the expression; when you look at it, you get the sense that although it looks frightening, it is just a poor misunderstood creature, like in the book.
excellent detail, very nice work.

Very interesting take on Grendel. It has a wildness to it but it isn't genuinely monstrous.

grendel's got all kinds of nihilism and junk in it
and he's an actual character instead of just a thingie that eats people and tears up stuff i think john gardner was a big hippie

I read Beowulf back in high school, but I've never heard of the book you mention. Sounds interesting!
I like the sketchy style here. Very energetic. Great job with tones and shading, especially with a ballpoint pen

thanks alot pen is difficult because you obviously use the smudging ability. well especially with rollerballs. ballpoint you can smudge A LITTLE, but with those pilot pens, the ink is down and that's it
hahaha
anyway, i definitely recommend reading Grendel. it's awesome
