"Not all Bactos have gills protected from damage and dessication like the Mantle and Clam Shells.
Older lineages often grow their gills out in the open, restricted to damp environments and waterways, unrestricted by a container though unaided as well the gills can grow a very large surface area.
This example has a gill organ that, rather than a carpet of fuzz like many do, grows in sheets. Boils dot its surface, storing water for when dry conditions occur. The organ crinkles and ripples with the aid of internally hardened support.
Above long thin branches unfurl and large tails of microloops grow all at once out of the ends."
