I remember viewing the sketch and loving and now that it's colored I love it even more. You colored it with oil pastels? Wow... I hardly even know how to use them.
I also love the color choice. It all looks very colorful and vibrant. Very appropriate for an underwater scene.

Thanks for the compliment! Oil pastes can be a little unruly but when you figure out how to not make mud with them they can be pretty cool! loL! And trust me, I made a lot of mud.... Thanks for the comparison with the sketch! I was wondering, do you think I lost anything by putting this piece in pastel?

Yeah I always end up making mud when I use oil pastels. I need more practice with them.
Nope I think it transfered from sketch to color pretty well. It lost a tiny bit of detail but I think that as a whole it looks better. But then again I'm nuts for color so I'm a bit biased. XD

The fish were actually asked to be put in by my teacher which I'm happy to say I agreed! I think I could have maybe pushed the composition more with how desolate this place was but also how colorful it is now thanks to the see life. But I'm worried that I would start to lose some of that lonely feeling to it... I'm not sure. I think this is just a piece I won't be completely happy with... I still like how it turned out though. There's no way I could possibly work back into this anyway b/c it is SUPER saturated with pastel! lol! Thanks for commenting!

I agree, I think the older feeling of desolation and loneliness could have come through more, but I love the happiness and colourthat the sea life has brought.

This is indeed oil pastel. I'm pretty good at chalk but oil is a new monster that's more molding then smudging. Feel free to drop by and you can check out my small selection and I can give you a few pointers if you want! I loves my pastels!!!!

It's quite strange that looking at this in its digital format you can see all the elements piled in and around one another. I love how clumpy waxy texture of the wax gives it that sense of three dimensionality.

To kinda reiterate what I was telling Naki, oil pastel feels more like molding with clay than drawing or smudging with pencils or charcoal. It's its' own kind of monster to understand. there are A LOT of layers that went into making this one and it didn't just develop over night. something I've learned to understand, especially with oil pastel, is that you can't just develop one spot at a time. The whole thing needs to be developed at the same time! It's frustrating and eye opening and not very easy to tame, but if you keep at it, you will have something that will make you very proud! Thanks for the comment!!!
