Description See pictures of these in my folder here .

This costume is not for everyone. Only intermediate to advanced swimmers should attempt swimming in it, and always have a buddy with you. For those of you who want to know how to swim in it, my Kairi made a swimming tutorial for you. Please practice first and always stay safe.

Lots of requests for this, so here you go.

This took a lot of research online to figure out for myself and I'm sharing it for other fans. xD
The tops are not covered in the tutorial. All I did was take the swimsuit material and cover a bikini top for Kairi, making up my own pattern for it. Sora's is a surfer's rash guard I cut the bottom off, put in elastic, and added the detailing, so when we're next to each other, people can see the similar theme based off their KH2 tops.

Everyone go say hi to my amazing Kairi! She's such a good sport and willing to put up with all my costume crap, and will wear whatever I make her. She needs to get credit for being awesome. ^_^

UPDATE: For those girls wanting to know how I would make a 'naked top' Sora, SEE HERE

A blanket Thank You to everyone who favorited this! If you do make a tail, please post a picture cause I want to see your interpretations and designs!

edit: DeviantArt moved this deviation for me... er... thanks?
edit2: Wow, this got a daily deviation?! No way O.o
edit3: redid the tutorial so it's a little easier to read... and doesn't have spelling mistakes.

Do you have any idea where i could get those fins that you mentioned and the swimsuit fabric.
I really want to make one, but I'm to scared that people will think I'm weird or something.
But it looks so much fun and I REALLY want to try it.

Actually, most of the time when we wore ours people asked where we got them or if they go try them on. So just have fun and enjoy - it's worth it for that experience of fulfilling that little kid dream of swimming like a merman/maid.
You can get the swimsuit knit at fabric stores like JoAnn's. The monofin can be tricky - some areas sell them in their sporting goods store, but we had to purchase ours online. This one is a great beginner's monofin that's lightweight but durable - perfect for cosplaying needs.
Remember to swim safe and have fun.

I love your line about your costume 'There is no hood because it's stupid and it's dangerous to swim in one'....I wish anime costume designers were so practical.

Anyway, great tutorial!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colt-kun In reply to moonymonster [2010-09-07 00:59:39 +0000 UTC]

designers job is to make it look cool. my job is to make it functional. But hoods are dangerous to swim with, and since Sora doesn't have a top anyways I figured it was irrelevant to have one.

And thanks mate!

Awesome!! I'm making a tail of my own!! And for some reason, I could swim perfectly in the monofin without practice... Maybe I was a mermaid in a past life.

I have to ask, are swimwear fabric ans actionwear fabric the same thing? because I'm have trouble getting a hold on it....do you know anywhere online that sells it?

I love your tutorial by the way! Thank you for the insperation!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colt-kun In reply to ninja-freak13 [2010-06-18 20:23:28 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if swimwear and actionwear are the same... what you're looking for is a nylon/spandex blend. nylon is the most common swimsuit material, and the spandex makes it more formfitting and stretchable.

How did you make the dorsal fin? And great tails!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colt-kun In reply to silverwingsfly [2010-06-07 22:47:20 +0000 UTC]

I had to make the dorsal fin soft so I could sit on it when needed, so I used craft foam. I cut the triangular fin, then added a slight curve cutting into the bottom side to match the curve of my backend. I used that to make two triangular pieces of the fabric, sewed them together, and slipped the foam into that. I CAREFULLY cut a slit into the back of my tail, measuring several times where the slit should be while it was on first, and sewed the tail in.
