Edit: forgot a title oopsHey motherfrikerz I'm back
Remember how I have a ton of characters and I almost never draw most of them? oops
Anyway, here are three old characters I haven't drawn in a long time.
They kind of got a little bit of a design change but it wasn't by much. I realised way too late that I could have done some casual clothes since these outfits are their work uniforms, but honestly, none of them are ever seen off duty in the story, or at least not for long enough that it's incredibly relevant, and Galileo is a detective so he's already in plainclothes. The only difference between his work uniform and his casual wear is that he wouldn't be wearing a tie lol
I took some time to do work on their toyhouse profiles just so I could add them here, I haven't really finished the information yet though, just the basics and the images. Ok, now I'm gonna go over them as characters for a lil bit!
I said lil bit when I started and then when I came back it was very long I'm sorry in advance but I know no one reads these except for me and one (1) of my friends so... besides I haven't done a Gorillaz headcanons post for a long, long time, the last one was in April of 2019, I needed to flex my writing muscles, even if it's just stream of consciousness nonsense.
~~
First up is Nikolai Valentin ~ toyhouse
He's the Chief Constable of the Olympus Mons Constabulary (OMC), ie the head honcho in charge of the police force for the colony. The colonies are basically equivalent to cities in terms of size and population and how they operate, Olympus is the largest of all Martian colonies and has millions of residents. So, Nikolai's not the head of the police on a national level like a commissioner, but he's still responsible for a pretty large area. Part of being is a Chief Constable is doing PR, basically, it involves speaking to the public about the actions the force is taking, as well as just generally looking out for the rest of the force and making sure everyone is doing their job. The Chief Constable is the highest rank in their respective force.
He works closely with the task force he set up to track Oculus and arrest her, in order to prevent a civil uprising or whatever. Fuck freedom of expression am I right? Nikolai is the one who initially has the idea to get the OMC a skater of their own to pursue Oculus on foot, since because of the way Martian colonies are constructed there's no room for automobiles. The skater has to be someone who's in relatively good shape, who knows the city, who takes instructions well, and who's well-read and has lots of free time.
Well, Nikolai - as you can imagine for a 50+ year old asshole with no wife or kids of his own and no parents left and who is immersed entirely in his job to the point where he may as well just live in his office - doesn't have many friends. BUT he does have a sister; they're not... on particularly good terms, but they're close enough and she's nice enough of a human being (wherever she inherited that gene from, Nikolai DID NOT get it) that she's willing to humour him. Her name is Atlantis, she has a wife and a son, the latter of whom is Ocean. Oh yeah, Ocean is Nikolai's nephew. They don't really know each other personally, they've met, sure, but never spoken extensively. All Ocean really knows about Nikolai is that he's the police chief. So as you can imagine it's a hell of a day when Nikolai shows up, unannounced, at the door and propositions Ocean to work for the police. Ocean IS a med student so the free time thing doesn't really track, but Ocean is... you know ... afraid of standing up authority, so he ends up agreeing to do it. Ocean's identity is kept under wraps for his own sake, after the operation is complete his skater persona, Audio, is just supposed to disappear and wait til the public forget about it. The only people who know who he is are members of the task force and they're all under strict orders to keep their mouths shut.

Second on the agenda is Galileo Bristol ~ toyhouse
He's an inspector, a detective inspector specifically. Originally from England, he dropped his position as DS in the Met and made the move to Mars because the OMC was short on detectives - not very fruitful to get into detective work when most of the crime is petty and can be solved by AIs - and he wanted to get out of England for personal reasons that he's mentioned in passing, but has yet to divulge any details on. That's for a later time. He could have just gone to America or something instead of moving PLANETS but... why would you, when you can not. Mars has free healthcare and honestly, the way America has gone politically, I don't think they ever will. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Lmao in my universe humans can literally colonise Mars before the US will ever get free healthcare
The duty of an inspector is to supervise a duty shift of subordinate officers, Galileo is a detective inspector so he has authority over a group of police constables and detective constables/sergeants. Inspectors handle controlling resources, delegating to subordinates, directing investigations, shit like that.
Galileo is kind of extremely jaded. The crime rates in Martian colonies are really low which should be a good thing, although it's mainly the result of the fact that the country is a police state, and it's boring for detectives who have nothing to do. All Galileo really wants is to work a drug bust or a nasty homicide like he used to do on earth, but alas nothing happens on Mars that the robots can't handle on their own, Mars is basically a police state, the entire population have their private information on a database that's the equivalent of a microsoft excel spreadsheet filled with things the state probably shouldn't know but hey it's the future totalitarianism is trendy. Don't worry the arc of the story is people pointing out that the government is bad, it'll be addressed.
The only REAL big bad organised crime stuff going on in Olympus is related to Florence, colloquially known as the queen of the Martian black market and the China-Rose hacktivist, neither of which can be found on the database, but that's a whole other thing. The investigations into those two are being run by other inspectors, it's not Galileo's business. In the past I incorrectly put Galileo in the special branch, which is like the anti-terrorist shit, but I didn't realise that the special branch is for threats that come from foreign nations but are working internally, like Soviet spies or what have you, and Oculus is not that.
Since Galileo has been on Mars for a few years, long enough that he even got promoted from sergeant to inspector, he knows Nikolai. Sort of. Not personally, if you couldn't tell Nikolai isn't the type to... 'make friends' or 'talk to people'. Galileo just likes to annoy him and get on his nerves whenever he's around, because like I said, Galileo is jaded and bored of his job and acting like a child is his favourite past time; if not, it's his usual state of existance.

And finally we have Chrysanthemum Buckley ~ toyhouse
Just Chrys for short. Chrys is a police constable, the lowest officer rank in the force. I know that since I'm using UK police ranks she should be called WPC, for woman police constable, but honestly it feels unnecessary to make the distinction. I mean, the UK commissioner (highest rank in the force!) is a woman, we're past the point of female constables being shocking. So in conclusion I'm not using reductive gendered terms for roles that are no longer gendered. Given the academy only lasts a few months, half a year at the longest, and Chrys applied to become an officer when she was 21, she's nearing the end of her two year probationary period. After it ends, she wants to apply to become a detective. She's very dedicated to her job, a bit of a suck up to authority, but what else can you expect from a police officer.
Constables do the footwork that the superiors need done, like taking calls, taking statements, doing door-duty, going on the beat, running errands, etc. Basically anything that their rank superiors need done but that they can't (or often, in Galileo's case, don't want to) do themselves.
Her design hasn't changed a huge amount except that she has bangs now. I changed her personality more than her looks tbh. She's still kind of a dumb bitch but it's more like she's ditzy and a bit excitable than actually dumb. You have to be not-dumb to be a detective, and I've always characterised her as being good at her job. At the time the story starts - so when Iris first becomes Oculus and starts doing her political activism bullshit - for reasons that don't matter some random PC wants a transfer out of his shift, and Chrys's ass-kissing finally pays off because whoever was incharge of the transfer decided to throw her a bone and she gets moved off the night shift, and ends up being put under Galileo's command.
Initially she, like a normal person who sees a barely-functional man baby in the inspector chair, is like "Are you sure you're in the right rank? are you even a police officer." and he takes a liking to her. She's put off by his lack of professionalism, especially when it comes to the chief, but she listens to his orders anyway and eventually they become friends. Lord forgive me for making a detroit become human reference in the year 2020, but Chrys is sort of like the Connor to Galileo's Hank, she takes care of him even when he won't do it for himself and she has his back even when he thinks he doesn't deserve it. Also Galileo is a fuckin sad borderline alcoholic jaded old detective and Chrys is a dumbass with no self awareness, oh yeah, it's buddy cop time
I just have to point it out because the thought of people misinterpreting their relationship makes me upset so, Chrys is 23 and Galileo is 38 it's not romantic, that age gap is way too big for my tastes lol.
