I don't know that I believe you.

Took a wander through your gallery. Even your "simple" pieces are astounding. You see and apply all these little details... Incredible amount of patience and eye for detail there.

On a completely unrelated topic... what martial arts do you do?

Thanks LOL

I've done a few different ones. Started with Shotokan Karate that my dad used to teach me a little. Then when I got older I did a little Kung Fu, then Taekwondo, a little kick boxing, then started at a place that taught loads of stuff. Mainly Jeet Kune Do but also tried Eskrima (Stick Boxing), Silat (Knife Fighting). My favourite and most effective was always JKD though. My instructor was taught by a guy who himself was taught by non other than Bruce Lee himself! How cool is that! What about you?

Oh wow. Which one are you focusing on now?

Well, other then the pressure point and general self-defense and how to fight dirty that one learns when the youngest with two older brothers... heh.

Well, I did a little bit of the Scottish broadsword, which translated into cane fighting. Right now I do muay thai and capoeira (hopefully we'll learn stick capoeria soon). I've been wanting to learn how to fight with a knife, but I have been having trouble finding an instructor up here. My muay thai teacher is trying to get me to do jujitsu as well for MMA... my thing is, I'm rather small and like to keep people at a physical distance (hence the kicking martial arts). You get me that close, I'm only going to want to fight dirty. Not so good for MMA bouts. I'd love to learn some of the holds though, so I'm torn. I have been playing around with looking into Krav Maga as well. Have no idea if I can find that one up here though.

Actually I cant affored to pay for lessons anymore, 90% of my cash goes into bills for my house and car and obviously food LOL The other 10% goes towards my girlfriend when I can afford to take her out!
I still like to keep supple and fit, and still practice a little when I can though. I know I can handle myself I tired to spar with a few friends but even just the blocking techniques with them they were complaining that it was hurting their arms! LOL
Jujitsu is definately a must for MMA, even just the basics. Because youre rather small, as you say, it would probably be better for you to get in close because of the range of your arms and legs but you probably already know that I know what you mean about the fighting dirty thing though, I'd be the same. JKD is all about being involved in a real fight without rules so they teach you to go for the eyes and throat ect. Take someone out using the least amount of energy. I dont think I could be part of a tournament with rules now, doesnt seem right to me LOL.

Krav Maga is another self defence that is about being in a real fight with no rules. Ive read alot about it and watched lots of documentary's of it, Id like to try it but again its the money really. There are a couple of really good books from amazon.com for Krav Maga I bought awhile back. Good instructions, photo's diagrams ect. Obviously not going to replace an actual instructor but the techniques are good to learn and the basics

Yeah, I get the cost thing. It is such a sad thing when the lack of money prohibits one from learning something new or keeping involved with something you love.

What you need to do is get together with a friend or someone that really wants to learn, especially if you don't have pads to help out. That way they won't mind the bruises and pain.

Practicality is why I started taking muay thai. I love capoeira, but the teacher I have focuses on teaching it as a dance and the game, so I learn the movements with the idea of not connecting with the kicks. There are actually a couple of capoeirista's in my muay thai class. They have been helping me learn how to aim the capoeira kicks (knowing proper distance and all) if I wanted to connect. I move pretty quick and my legs are decently long, especially for my height. I have the power. So, capoeira and muay thai are good for me. However, you are right about getting in close.

I don't think jujitsu is hugely practical for real world application (dang, I wouldn't want to be rolling around on a city street and you can't really do a hit and run), but some of the holds are good to know. I would like to relearn some of the choke and arm holds I learned growing up wrestling with my brothers...

Practicality is what drives me in my choices in martial arts after I started capoeira (which I started taking strictly because it looked so fun). It is the reason why I haven't taken karate, taekwondo, and other such popular martial arts. Nothing against the disciplines, more that they seem to be taught for competitions and demonstrations.

I am rather interested in learning for practicality; its all about learning to do what's needed to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. My muay thai instructor is good for teaching it that way. It's nice.

Which is why Krav Maga interests me. What books did you get?

Yeah wish I could but none of my friends are really into that. I have pads and everything but theyre not really bothered about self defence or anything. 3 of my closest friends used to do weightlifting, keeping fit in the gym for a while but only one of them stuck at it and he's losing interest now. But its up to them what they do, I'm not forcing anything

I used to work at a place where a few of the lads practiced Capoeira in the works gym, looked good but like you said its not very practical for a street fight.

I've seen a fair few street fights and been involved in a couple and alot of them do end up at some point or another grappling then rolling around on the floor. The only trouble is being on the floor is an open invitiation for his mates to come and kick you! Definately learn some choke and arm holds though, although again I'm not sure Ive ever seen someone in a real fight actually able to get a hold on his opponent. Its just so different trying to get an arm lock on someone in an actual fight than in training.

Youre right about Karate and Taekwondoe being taught for competitions. Alot of it is about getting in the correct stances and things and you just wouldnt want to do all that in a fight, its just not practical. Saying that though the teachers I had did say that and taught us about street fighting so it was a good insight.

This was one of the books......[link]
The other is the advanced one showing knife and gun defence I think......[link]

Again everything is very practical in those books, very useful. But like I said before if you want a fighting style that is all about practicality try Jeet kune don if you can. Id say its the best self defence system out there. It takes everything that works from hundreds of other martial arts and discards the useless bits.

Ah, that's just sad.

Thanks for the links.

I'll definitely have to take a look at Jeet Kune Do. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find a class up here (as per usual).

I've basically come to the conclusion that learning a mixed style of martial arts, all in the practical vein for true self defense, is the best way to go. Gives you options in a fight.

I really need to do more sparring...

I have muay thai today! Quite looking forward to it, despite being incredibly sore from capoeira this weekend. Ah, yes.

Not a problem.

Yeah Im lucky living only 15 minutes away from a place that teach all different styles. Just cant afford it at the minute! LOL

Yeah I agree about learning a mixed style, its always gonna benifit you in a fight.

Sparring with as many different people as possible is probably the best way to prepare yourself, its just finding the partners to do it!

Ive always liked the look of Muay Thai, we used the hold grabbing the back of the head and knees to the body. Always good and useful! Im just sore from weight training and running yesterday, and just finished another 3 miles on the runner at full gradient and speed then an ab workout! Some people just call me crazy LOL

traveling-Bard In reply to commando-kev [2011-09-13 23:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Very true. Thankfully, I have quite a few people I could spar. Unfortunately, we all get in the habit of sparring with the same people. We are such habitual creatures...

That is a lot of running.

I've been trying to develop a weight training routine to strength my triceps, shoulders, back, and full core. I've been attempting to use the machines at a gym, but I think I need to find the equivalent in free weights. Gotta get those muscles that aren't used as much in capoeria or muay thai so I'm balanced out.
