Designed as a successor to the Uu class destroyer of 9AF, 18AF's P class still retains some vestigial legacies of the long-lived design S class destroyer of which the Uu was derived. But unlike the comparatively unsuccesful G1/V class destroyer prototype which marked the end of the line for that long lived species, the P class much more successfully applied more modern technologies into the fray, succeeding dramatically in comparison to the unpromising life of the erstwhile G1.
Like preceeding designs, an emphasis on torpedo placement is a defining characteristic of the P class However, both her guns and turrets feature enhanced crew protection from armored emplacements, marking the P class as a thoroughly more modern design right from the gate. Her anti-aircraft armament, while not exceptional, features two twin 50mm AA artillery emplacements, giving the type a degree of protection against high flying aircraft not typical of smaller GRCKN vessels. First launched in 18AF, the P class complimented the secretive G2 class heavy destroyers quite well. Notably, the G2's radar system adapted well to the P class, whose forward mounted superstructure made the radar system easily applicable to the design.
The design was further revisited in 22AF with the improved P-bis class, which resulted from the combined pressures of the grecken's need to reduce steel usage while continuing to augment their fleet size and incorporate improved technology into it. Following the annexation of the Maktak and Pongatar Islands in 19AF, the navy's need for more ships to patrol this new territory resulted in a revisiting of the design: however, concerns of steel shortages resulted in the navy making some modification to the design for sake of economy, eliminating the fully enclosed 127mm turrets and instead replacing them with lighter, open backed variants. Similarly, the armored torpedo housing were eliminated, cutting roughly 200 tons off of the type. The superstructure was raised to accommodate the addition of a fifth 20mm AA position facing the bow, and twin Pelikan ASW positions were added to the top of two of her three turrets. Culminally, the P-bis class were built from the gate with ASDIC equipment, indicating the technological catch-up that the grecken was committed to.
Twelve P-class and six P-bis class destroyers were built between 18 and 22AF, with production switching over to the H class destroyers in 24AF.
