Description
Owlbear (version 2) concept art for The Forgotten Realms (Dungeons & Dragons). This was a rejected version (ultimately), but one of my personal favorite, as it explored a more morbid-like approach to the "beak" (lol), with the exposed skeletal area of the mouth. Seemed a bit more savage and scary, but may have strayed to far from the classic look to be totally accepted by D&D fans.
The final version approved is featured in the "Forgotten Realms: Monster" piece posted earlier, featuring several different types of monsters you'll encounter. That owlbear has the more wide-eyed look to make it look a bit more sinister.

The mouth reminds me of a Krenshar. They could peel back the skin of their face at will to use a Fear-inducing ability, but not in fact undead.

I like most of it, but to be honest, the whole exposed skeleton "beak" thing makes it come across as undead to me. And since owlbears are not an inherently undead creature, (unless something changed,) I'd imagine that might have been the issue. D&D monster design is pretty consistent about such traits only being applied to undead monsters.

Very cool indeed. I loved the new take on the "beak"!

The only thing I don't like is how it's beak is exposed skull. I think It should've been a beak. But besides that, you melded the owl and bear together very well, as opposed to just a bear with a beak.

I quite dig this redesign! I don't know if you're familiar with the krenshar from the 3rd edition Monster Manual, but the snout of this owlbear is quite like the krenshar's head.

Reminds me of the Howler I think its called, they had the ability to scare creatures by pulling back the skin on their faces when they growled or something.. very fearsome, nice work.

I love the coherence of the design. It looks like a real creature which could be described as both owl-like and bear-like, instead of a chimeric mishmash based on the name alone.

the "beak" is more frightening, but less natural.
There are many sinister creatures in the bestiary. An owlbear should scare like an hungry bear, not like an evil creature

That is bad ass! This it what we, DM's, tried to get into the players mind when they encountered them. That would really scare a player now!

i really like this concept, except the skin pulled back at the mouth. just that little piece. the mouth/nose are is great, just needs skin. and honestly, the only reason i don't like the skinless part, is because another beast does the same thing. the krenshar. otherwise, i would be woohoo! wicked cool!
just sayin'-- from one of the longer time fans of the game

This is one of the best owlbear pics I have seen. I would use this for an arctic owlbear.

It is cool looking, but I'd agree it does stray away from the true animal nature of the Owlbear.

Technically, there is a variety of 'greater' (Dire?) Owlbear that once roamed the Realms, but is considered 'extinct'. One is described in the Ed Greenwood book Cormyr: A Novel. You have just drawn something that could very well represent that creature (and who knows? There just may be a few left lurking in remote places).
