Description
More folio work, and most likely going on my 1st set of business cards.A character i've been developing since high-school for an old mecha idea; this is the 10th or so time i've re-designed it.
Ugh, can't believe how much time i spent on this. maybe i should give speed paints a go.

Wat the?!? i got a DD!?!?! WOAH...thanks for the support guys, it is very much appreciated!!

Check out the artwork of this japanese dude named Tsutomu Nihei. Google it or something, he's pretty awesome.

Woah...now that's an interesting style. he really likes using a lot of contrasting shadow and lighting. i don't think i've seen many manga art done like this.

The shading more or less inspired by french noir comics. Those guys know how to do stuff seriously dark and moody. Always good times.

Lol, not at the moment. It's not supposed to look like a robot, anyways; one of the things I have it looking like is a chimera with a snake's head and neck, a lion's body, and the tail of a scorpion. Something like that. Because the whole story's set in the future, anything is possible. And this is the robot that can turn into ANYTHING.

Hmmmm...do u mean it should look more organic but still resemble some kind of machine? cos that's one crazy powerful robot!

It's actually the prototype for a completely new set of robots, too; it's gone out of control more than once.
Here's a bit of backstory. It's using an OS that learns from other beings' behaviour, and while it's using a commercially available chip (granted, a very OP one), it's not using the most advanced one, so it keeps falling behind on the smartness front. It actually gets overwhelmed in one scene I've got because every other character is wearing Guy Fawkes outfits.

That would be awesome. No worries about the late response; I've been down, myself (appendix out, store I'm working at closing, the class I actually tried to pass failed me because my teacher's a dick...anyways).
The first idea I had was said robot in several different "bodies" - i.e. it can break itself up into smaller pieces, and each one can sort of have its own "look". For example, ten or twelve of these, each having a wolf's body...but the legs don't go to feet or paws, they narrow to points; the muzzle is literally dripping with teeth; the head has too many eyes to make sense. In essence it LOOKS like a wolf at first glance, but when you actually stare at it (if you get a chance to, before it eats your head off) it's something definitely scarier.
The second was it does get confused sometimes, so at one point it becomes something of a very odd chimera - scorpion's tale, body of a lion, head and neck of a snake. Whatever colours you want to work with feel free to. I never really had any sort of colour scheme going with the thing.
Thanks so much in any case! Feel free to change whatever!

Wouldve been a million times better if you have changed the background or simply added some shadows to the ground. The character is extremely well done but not so keen on the background. Needs balance.

ConceptualMachina In reply to mohzart [2010-12-01 00:17:19 +0000 UTC]
tbh, i never really intended it to have a background and just wanted to focus on the character...sorta like a concept piece. was thinking of just leaving it on plain white, but added a bit of colour to the background to add a bit of mood. i could've went with something simple for the bg, but couldn't be bothered ur thoughts are still much appreciated

mohzart In reply to ConceptualMachina [2010-12-01 02:14:09 +0000 UTC]
I could suggest you edit it with a simple greyscale gradient background and shadow under the character.
Seriously the background is really stealing the optimum show of your character. It needs the viewers full attention without the high contrast blues.
I am being harsh with you because I really like the character but the presentation isnt doing justice

ConceptualMachina In reply to mohzart [2010-12-01 14:48:30 +0000 UTC]
lol, dude, be as harsh as u want to be coming from a fellow artist, so long as it's constructive and i get something out of it, i see no reason not to. more attention to the character huh? i've always liked contrast tho...i musta went overboard with the background :s maybe with my next one i should keep the background a nice white or ur gradient grey.

mohzart In reply to ConceptualMachina [2010-12-01 16:05:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah the piece is about the character. so most of the attention should be on it. It's good that you accept harsh crit when given. Most artists get angry and cry or something. but yes its for improvement! I use gradients myself and the characters stick out greatly. Presentation is key

Heheh, well i'm trying to accept criticism more especially since this is meant to be an art community. the kind of criticism i tend to have most problem with is from ppl who aren't artists and usually don't say anything helpful...ugh, kinda reminds me of my current boss
still, i guess i should try to listen to them too.
I've only just started using gradients

The beauty. This is an awesome piece and it is easy to see that you have spent a good deal of time making it.
I think you should give Zbrush a try. This mech would look fantastic in 3D.

It's an old idea i developed back in high-school of a living machine called a Symbiot. it was able to fuse with other organisms so they could operate it (still figuring out how that's done :s). this one's the main character's machine. it's about 7-8 feet tall i'd say.
