Description Left: Bearded Tree

The bearded tree, or woolly tree, genus Barbarbor, is a striking tree characteristic of the vegetation of Čilim, in both arid and savanna regions. The various species’ thick stubby trunks lack leaves but are densely covered with shaggy white hair. The bearded tree photosynthesizes in the bark of the trunk, while the ‘wool’ screens it against the excesses of equatorial solar radiation. In dry areas and seasons, it traps water vapor close to the trunk. Thus some species in monsoon areas shed their hair during the rainy season and regrow it during the dry season. Several regional cultures cultivate Barbarbor species for making cloth. They require careful tending, because small animals also find the furry branches comfy.

Right: Assassin Tree

In dense tropical forests, where canopy cover is complete, light is at a premium, and striven for jealously. Some trees grow especially tall or quickly to get ahead. The assassin tree turned down a path of malevolent arboricide. Specialized, sideways-growing limbs penetrate the trunks of its neighbors and release toxins, killing them. The assassin tree then shoots up triumphantly in full sun, from the decaying remains of the other unlucky tree, before sending forth more murderous shoots.

I love the idea of the bearded tree covered in white hair - some cacti almost look like they were covered in hair, but not quite. Great captivating designs.

I have seen those cacti, they're pretty cool. I kind of thought, "What if there were a whole bunch of them and you could actually harvest them?"

I see. An orchard of white bearded trees with colorful flowers would look pretty surreal.

Since you mention it, I don't know what color the flowers are yet

Somehow I imagined them red.

just when one thought the Strangler Fig was the most lethal...I find this greatness.

part of me imagines that there might be attempts to grow Bearded Trees in captivity...and the attempts would propel agriculture/greenhouses forward lots and lots  (IRL, Giant Water Lilies had the same outcome)

Thanks. I see you've been to my tumblr too.

The assassin is basically trying to up the game on figs. I figure people will domesticate bearded trees in the area where they grow, and "shear" them occasionally and weave cloth. They might even transport it to other savanna areas, but I haven't given any thought to greenhouses yet. I'll look up water lilies though.
