The Earth is 75% water. We have no shortage of water. What we have is a shortage of potable (drinkable) water, but the reason is a shortage of technology worldwide for processing and cleaning water, not because people in the First World waste ice. There is literally no connection whatsoever between the water used in the United States and the water that people don't have in Africa or South America; there's no way to provide drinking water from the developed world to the developing world in an inexpensive way.
Rather than complain about people wasting ice in places where there is no shortage of potable water, we should be donating time or money, or at least drawing attention, to groups that fund water filtration and water distillation ventures in the developing world. There's one particularly promising technology where for less than $5 they can build a portable water filter that's solar powered; I heard about that a few years ago.
The issue behind water shortage is largely either that corporations who built water filtration in poor nations are massively overcharging for their services, and weak governments have little power to force them to make the water more freely available, or the water filtration and distillation infrastructure has been destroyed by war and civil unrest. Only in deserts is the issue that there is literally a water shortage, and if we had some way of getting water cheaply from high-water areas to deserts, we'd be doing it. But water's so heavy and expensive to ship that it is almost more economic to dig a river into the desert than it would be to send water in by planes or trucks.

hehe, this is cute and most certainly meaningful, though there is an actual reason for the Ice Bucket challenge, especially the ASL Challenge. The frigid shock from the ice water stimulates the nerves to mimic how one living with ASL would feel. And, of course, almost all of the time, those who take the challenge also donate money. They've gathered millions of U.S Dollars thanks to the challenge

Well, unless they're using bottled water, I don't really find it wasting any water. The water goes into the ground, which will go back to the source of water that you get from the faucet in the first place

In fact, in all honesty, there is no such thing as wasting water (Unless you're shooting it up past Atmo). The Earth has had just about the same amount of water on it since it's creation, and water, when used, will go to one of three places; Into the water table into the ground, vaporized into the sky, or back into the plumbing.
