When and how did you get started in Cosplay?
I started cosplaying in 2009 at San Diego Comic Con. I was lucky to grow up in San Diego during an era that you could walk up to SDCC and buy a ticket for that day and walk around without bumping into someone with every step…. I’ll pause to let you image that... I was always fascinated with all the cosplayers walking around as their favorite characters, it felt like Halloween in July and I loved it. So one year I bought a costume and down the rabbit hole I went.
What was your first Cosplay?
My first cosplay was Slave “Huttslayer” Leia. One of my favorite sagas to watch with my dad growing up was the Star Wars (Original) Trilogy. Growing up I always thought that Leia was a badass in that scene even though I usually am team dark side. So when I decided that I wanted to try cosplaying I keep circling back to that look, a few weeks before SDCC I bought the costume and the journey began.
What was the most difficult character?
Most difficult character…. I would have to go with Margaery Tyrell in her gown from the “Purple Wedding”. The dress itself took about 400 hours to make, a lot of the details on the dress are made by hand including the 300+ roses down the train. It’s also one of the hardest to wear, the wig is heavy and likes to wiggle after a long day, the dress itself weighs about 15 pounds and of course is a cream color with a long train so you’re attracting every speck of dirt at the convention so moving feels like a challenge.
What characters are you planning and type of character are you drawn to?
How much time do we have lol….
I’m constantly adding to the list of things to do, this upcoming year I have a few new Star Wars looks coming including a new version of Asajj Ventress, some new takes on some classic characters like Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Black Widow a few more X-men.
I typically seem like I’m drawn to villains but honestly something about the costume just has to catch my eye. The whole thought behind cosplaying in having fun so it just needs to have that oooo factor for me.
What is your process when starting from the beginning with a new cosplay?
First I OOOOO at some form of art/media lol….
the hard part for me is deciding on what costume to do first. Once I decide on my game plan for an event it’s a measure of how much time and what supplies are needed. From there it is shop, then deciding what part will take the longest and start working on that. Typically things with new skills or a lot of details will get prioritized, along with parts that are needed to work on other parts. Then it’s just a matter of picking something to binge watch and diving in.
Are there any helpful hints in sewing, costume design or any other aspects of your cosplay that you discovered in doing your creations?
For sewing: Keep a stock of cheap material. If you’re really nervous on something practice on cheap fabric from the clearance section (Walmart has a bunch of fabrics for a few dollars a yard), or something you get from the second hand store.
Designing: Joann pattern sales are your friends…. It’s a cheap way to stock up for when you decide to do something last minute (like me). Also never be afraid to “Frankenstein” a pattern. Like the sleeves from one the front of another… mash em up… you’re never required to use a pattern to the exact lines (this is a good reason to have that cheap stock to test on too)
In general advice: you will hear this often and is a rare do as I say not as I do… TEST RUN YOUR OUTFITS…. Wigs, shoes, everything… you’re gonna be wearing this thing for hours and you want to make sure you know and have time to fix anything that may not be working before the event.
Do you have a preferred brand of makeup in your cosplay? And if so why?
I love NYX. It’s affordable, easy to find at stores and has some bold palettes and lip color options. All things I love when it comes to cosplay. I’m not a huge makeup person outside of cosplay so not having to spend a small fortune is nice, same with not having to hunt down something at the last minute. Also don’t underestimate bold color options, colors are more muted in photographs so having that extra pop is a lovely feature.
What are you listening to?
We’re about to get into how all over I am….
My in car playlist can go anywhere from 80s rock to 90s alternative to pop music. Some of my go to artists include : Metallica, AC/DC, Queen, Linkin park, All American Rejects, Dashbord Confessional, Mumford and Sons, Fall out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Taylor Swift, Blink 182, Counting Crows.
Favorite Movies? My favorite movies include: When harry Met Sally, Father of the Bride, 10 Things I Hate About You, most of the MCU, the Star Wars saga, Harry Potter, American Mary, Nightmare on Elm Street, Trick r Treat, Evil Dead, Sherlock Holmes
Favorite Animes? It’s honestly been a long time since I’ve watched any animes but I remember loving Rurouni Kenshin, Hellsing, Full Metal Alchemist and of course Pokemon
Favorite TV Shows?
#1 will always be The Clone Wars… everything else I’ll break down by genre
“Reality” shows… Masterchef, Sugar Rush, Nailed It, Making It
Sitcoms… I Love Lucy, Parks and Rec, How I Met Your Mother, Boy Meets World, Girl Meets World
Comic… Batman the Animated Series, Lucifer, Daredevil, Punisher, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Other.. Sherlock, the Frontier, The Crown, Walking Dead, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things
Is there a scene from an anime, cartoon, movie or tv show that left a big impression on you and what was it?
Ben and Leslie’s wedding in Parks and Rec
I love that they threw traditions out the window and more or less eloped surrounded by friends in a place that was special to them.
Books?
TBH I haven’t done a lot of reading lately outside of Star Wars books and Comics lately and nothing from childhood sticks out as a favorite. But as far as Star Wars books go I love Dark Disciple, Ahsoka, Maul Lockdown and Darth Plagueis.
as far as comics go… I’m currently in love with Harleen… I wish it was more than three part series, House and Powers of X, Absolute Carnage Series, Something is Killing the Children, Nomen Omen
Games?
Sagrada, Settlers of Catan, Codename, Monopoly (who doesn’t love a classic that destroys friendships lol), Star Wars Armada, Dominion
It’s been a while since I’ve played a non board game… but if you want to go old school: Kingdom Hearts, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Doom, Castle of the Wind, Tetris, Minesweeper (I did mention I’m all over right?)
Beverage?
Mt Dew and Strawberry Banana Smooties…. And if it’s near the holidays Snickerdoodle Hot Chocolate from Starbucks.
Fast Food/ Junk Food of choice?
I don’t really eat a lot of fast food… if I do its either Arbys or In n Out
Candy bar?
Reeses, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, and Butterfingers. Oh and Twizzlers…
Favorite Breakfast cereal?
Cocoa Krispies and Lucky Charms.
Is there something not going on in the cosplay world that you would want to see or is there something you would want to change?
I would love to see less drama in general. My bad joke is usually cosplay is high school with cooler outfits. I don’t really get why people take it all so seriously, like we’re all dressing up as superheroes and tv characters etc… why are people so picky about things. Be respectful, treat people nicely and have fun; it’s a hobby it’s supposed to be fun
What was your favorite toy growing up?
I think either my Gameboy or the N64. My dad bought them for all of us to play Pokemon together and honestly it’s some of the best memories of my childhood
Who is your biggest character crush and why?
Winter Solider… I blame Sebastian’s smirk.
You enter a warehouse. There is little light, but you are able to find your way around. The sound of music draws you to a corner of the warehouse. There are FIVE GHOUL CLOWNS, playing a dancing video game. They have razor sharp teeth and scary weapons. Magic can not affect them; they sense your presence and turn facing you. They run to you to attack. Time to fight! What character would you want to be to defeat them and how would you handle the situation?
Deadpool… Can’t die and would use humor and a truck load of weapons to fight my way out. Honestly if I’m gonna be in that kinda situation I might as well have fun with it.
If you had to be chained with a character for one year, what would be the character and what would you do?
I can’t pick between two soooo either
Elektra… I’ve always wanted to learn how to use sai’s and a year sounds like enough time to get the hang of it lol.
Or Lucy Ricardo…Cause let’s be honest, that would be a fun year.
You can have dinner with your favorite character. And at this dinner you may ask one question. Who would be the character and what would be your one question?
Asajj Ventress… What was your favorite mission?
What's number 1 on your bucket list? (Something you want to do before you leave the planet).
See the Northern lights and foster as many pets as I possibly can and help them have a good life. We actually took care of 12 kittens this year and their mama so that one’s off to a good start but its ongoing so I picked two
What advice would you give to people getting started in Cosplay?
Credit the people you work with!!
Anyone that helps makes any part of your costume, the shop that you bought your wig, YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER.… all of it. You will always get advice on to craft within your means, to not care what others think, and to always have fun… all of which are true and sound advice. But crediting takes very little time and goes a long way, it gets forgotten often and it’s a shame.
