Darth Vader, born as Anakin Skywalker, is both a villain and hero character in the Star Wars franchise. He is a high-ranking Jedi Knight-turned-powerful Sith Lord, and he stands as one of the most iconic and greatest villains in general fiction.
In the saga films, he was the secondary antagonist of the original trilogy, serving as the main antagonist of both A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back, and the (former) secondary antagonist of Return of the Jedi before redeeming himself, and the main protagonist of the first 2 prequel films before becoming the secondary antagonist in Revenge of the Sith. In the stand-alone films, He was the protagonist of the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the secondary antagonist in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
