Description Painting for AP: the assignment was to "capture a sleeping person." Janet came over and I took a picture of her, but it doesn't look a thing like her (it doesn't really matter, though.) Although the picture of it is awful, I like it in real life. Does anyone have any tips on photographing oil paintings? I can never get the pictures to look good.

Oil on canvas w/ toned gesso
12" x 16"

EDIT 12-12-06: took new picture; looks much better.

Wow... what a wonderful painting I not only *faved* this but had to watch for more. I also put this in my latest story journal. Here is the link if you'd like to check it out [link]

Absolutely beautiful! Truly I wish I could paint like that - something I have recently decided to learn.

As for photographing it, a friend told me (yes, I don't have personal experience with this, as I have only recently took up painting - like a month ago) that you take a picture of it in a dark room (just a room that's dark, not a Dark Room) with the flash of a camera on, and looking at the painting straight on. I suppose if you have a Day lightbulb (or a low-wattage halogen) you could focus the light on it so that there's no glare or sheen and then take a picture of it without the camera's flash on... Try it and let me know if it works!

That's awesome! it has a great classic style, The shades and colors are great!
(about your photographing paintings issue, I had to photograph some drawings a while ago, and I saw that its a matter of having a room with good lighting, and a good photoshop expert. With those two, the result generally its better. Or at least that's what I've seen)
