Melanie wasn't worried when she registered for the hunter jumper class, or when she was walking the course before the class started. She definitely wasn't worried when she saw the competitors ahead of her perform flawlessly. It was no biggie. Literally. She had jumped the same height at Briar Lake Stables many times without any issues. So how come the jumps looked so much bigger at the show? Maybe, she was a little bit worried. Louie specialized in show jumping, but Melanie doubted the stallion would have any problems. They practiced quite a bit for it. He was a little strong, espesically when he was looking at the next jump. Melanie would have to set him back and keep him collected for a nice canter up to the jump, instead of the freight train that he tried to be. She knew what to do and what to expect from Louie. The idea was to shake things up a little bit. Mel has done show jumping for 6 years, and working with Tombs gave her a small insight to new possibilities. Her love for show jumping is still there, however she wanted to take some small steps outside of only doing show jumping. Why not try hunter jumper, equitation, cross country, or hunting? The jumps are all still there, just in different environments. In theory, it should be a breeze.
It still could be just as easy. No one said it had to be difficult. The knowledge was all there. So what! Melanie thought to herself. Jumping is suppose to take her worries away each time to they, her and the horse, go over a jump. Kind of like chucking old baggage off into garbage shoot...but instead it's into the air? Point is, it isn't supposed to stress her out. She couldn't let it get in her head that the other riders have more exprience in the hunter jumper arena. That wouldn't make her any less of a rider either.
Louie brought Mel outside of her head with a shrill neigh. His head was head in the air, nostrils flared, and ears forward. Melanie's eyes snapped to the black stallion, mostly startled because he was standing quietly beforehand. She then followed the horse's gaze, turning to see what caught his attention. She half expected it to be another horse, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Louie was all tacked up and polished for their turn to compete. They already did their warm-up for the show, and are currently waiting. During that time was when Mel got stuck in her head. The only thing that she could think of was maybe the jumps caught Louie's eye? Was there an invisible monster somewhere again? Or did he just realize they were about to go a jump a course in front of some spectators?
One by one, horse and rider filtered into the arena, until it was Melanie and Louie up next on the call list. The closer to the arena they got, the more fidgety Louie became. She'd spoke calming words to the stallion to try to make him settle down and relax. Focusing more on Louie than her thoughts, made her relax more into the saddle. By the time the announcer called for them, they were both calmer. Mel rode the stallion into the arena and allowed him to show off a little as they cantered a circle before approaching their first jump in the course. In no time at all, it was almost like they were back home in their training arena.
