Description

A very quick entry I did of Kinavara Kalumburu  and Lincoln Wheeler  for the-fren ’s Sydney Show jumping event.

Story:
After the last show, Lincoln had worked closely with Penny who recently came to Kinavara as another trainer to work beside Eden. The whole thing was nice because he was working so closely beside two other trainers who had so much experience, but he also had thoughts of self doubt. He noticed how Eden and Penny helped coached and even took over a few of the young prospects from time to time but he wondered if there was a reason. Was he not training well enough? We’re they fixing holes he missed? He was quiet about it though, because if he was honest? Eden and Penny scared him. They kinda were like his new stepmoms who he genuinely did not want to piss off. And they were never really rude to him, they just were firm about certain things to get across what it was that needed to happen. But he had noticed that Eden was getting better from when she first shown up at Kinavara after the whole ordeal she had faced between her last show to now. She wasn’t so quit to snap. He found out she actually was a really nice person, and she had a comforting smile and many words of wisdom to share. She wanted to lead though, which was fine. Penny was a leader too but she was more quiet. She talked when she felt there was something that needed to be said, and her eyes scanned for every perfection and every imperfection. He had a lot of respect for them both, and he really wanted to make them happy. So he went to the Sydney Show. The one he had been dreading a bit. While the last show was a successful, he still felt nervous that he would screw it up. Maybe he would get too tense with Kalum? And his doubt while showing the stallion was strong. Was he going too fast? Too slow? Was he really the rider that Belle and now Eden and Penny were claiming he was? So many questions continued to circle his head, and the pressure of Belle on one shoulder and now Eden and Penny on the other was so heavy he really wanted to just lay down and cry. He didn’t care where, just somewhere. He wanted the pressure to go away. That’s why he grew to love riding Brownie. He didn’t feel the pressure to produce him anywhere past where his goals were. He chose the training path without a definite ending point. He just was happy to be riding the obertaurer. But with Kalum. Kalum wasn’t fully his, and he had to remind himself of that. He knew the stallion better than he knew himself but the horse still wasn’t his. He had to create the stallion for Kinavara, not for himself. And that meant proving through shows he was actually worthy of his high amount of focus that was spent going into his training.
“Are you ready?” Penny asked. She was standing beside Carol, who had come to help groom for Lincoln and the others competing. Mostly for Lincoln though. She knew he needed the emotional support.
“Yeah- of course,” he smiled down nervously from the saddle as they stood outside the gate leading into the arena. Thankfully Eden had pushed for a smaller height than Belle had him do last time. A safe 1.20m course. They had schooled this height enough he knew they would have a clean and safe round.
“Alright. I’m going to go join Eden then okay? I’ll get a video so you can watch later..” Penny nodded and gave him a comforting smile.
“You got this Link, you know you do right? Eden knows you do, I know you do. And Kalum sure as hell knows he does. Just do your thing. Count okay?” Penny spoke, giving Kalum a small pay on his shoulder before turning and walking off. Lincoln took a breath, and his eyes focused on the current rider in the ring. A particularly handsome pair.
“Nice horse… and rider…” Carol smiled, glancing to Lincoln.
“Mhhhmm. I mean- the horse. He looks nice. He’s a pretty bay…” Lincoln spoke, his eyes flicking from the rider to the horse.
“Yeah alright, looks like you can go in Link, do your think okay?”
“Mhm, I will try my best…”

As he entered the ring he felt the stallion under him seem to wake up. As he gathered the reins and focused on the current rider and staying out of his way he held the stallion carefully under him before watching the other pair finish the course. One rail. The stewards fixed the single jump and his eyes flickered down to the stallion below him who’s usually dark red coat now gleamed from the orange sunset that had come with the warm weather. It was warm. His tweed jacket which he has carefully made with the Kinavara logo sticker in the breast was warm and he suddenly wished he decided not to go with such a stylish look and just a simple polo. But he let out a breath and wiped the sweat from his brow.
Don’t look at the stands.
But yet he did, and immediately spotted Eden and Penny in their matching caps. The gold from the Kinavara logo showing. Penny was holding up her phone.
He looked away, asked for a nice trot from Kalum to help get the horse more focused on him. He did a smaller circle, asked for a canter leaving it and started towards the first jump as soon as he was given the go with a high whistle. Kalum was already ready. The sun was heavy in the sky. Peeking from behind some clouds. It was a gorgeous evening. But all Link could hear was the heavy hoof beats, the small grunts from the stallion and the satisfying sound of them flying through the course without a single click. The stallion was comfortable, in his element, and Lincoln would honestly say he was in the same boat. He suddenly wasn’t recalling the thoughts of Belle, or Eden, or Penny. Or anyone. Just himself, and his stallion with the tail on fire. He watched the stallion carefully lift himself up and over each jump in a fashion that was respectable in every way. He could only imagine how nice his future offsprings would be. They could only be just as perfect as him, and hopefully with the right pairing just as talented. With the same scope and natural expertise. Lincoln was spooked from his element when he heard a light tap, his head turned and he watched from the corner of his eye as the pole wobbled, but did not fall. It stayed, and he let out a breath and focused on the next jump. He knew it would have been okay. If it had fallen oh well. It was only a pole in one of the many courses that Lincoln would take with Kalum. And as they finished, he grinned, patting the stallion's neck as he heard a round of applause from the stands and trotted towards the exit gate where he could already see Penny, Eden, and Carol waiting.
That was good. He should be proud. He should be very proud, and he wanted to be. But he couldn’t quite see the expressions on Eden and Penny’s features. His riding was good, and he knew it was. Him and Kalum had been on the same page as usual. They had been on the same track, through the slightly long and short spots that they both knew it was in their own accounts. There was no arguing. There never was thankfully. Him and Kalum went hand in hand, but Lincoln mostly knew it was because the stallion was so forgiving and flexible he would help support his rider in any way possible.
As he got closer to the others his smile only grew. Eden was happy. Penny was happy. And Carol was BEAMING. He chuckled a bit as they came up and surrounded him. Carol giving him a high five, Penny offering a “well done,” and “couldn’t have done it better myself” and finally Eden offering a “very precise. It was professional. You did really well,” which only made Lincoln smile so wide he knew he had to look like an absolute fool.
“Thank you, so much. I really appreciate that all. I’m- I'm really happy with how we did.” He spoke honestly, patting the stallion’s sweaty neck. He still had so much energy left, but Lincoln slipped down from the saddle and slid the reins over his neck as Carol offered him a peppermint and Penny and Eden gave a few good pats.
“I can tell Kalum us as well, as he should be and as you should be. I’m happy that you are happy,” Eden nodded, still smiling as she took her place beside Lincoln as they started back towards the barn.
“I’m sure you’ll get a nice placing out of that. I got the video as well.” Penny added, waving her phone slightly. “I’ll send it to you once we get back to the barn,” she promised, which made Lincoln nod, but he was obviously not paying too much attention. He stroked Kalum’s neck and still was smiling proudly. He would give a lot to be feeling as happy as he currently was. Or even go be half as happy, and proud, and confident as he was. He knew it had a lot to do with Penny and Eden’s words which had struck him pretty hard if he was completely honest. He wanted to cry from pure joy but not in public. He didn’t want to look like a fool in front of the few people he was close with. Or any other bystanders who may watch him and Kalum in the future. He knew their future was bright, or the stallion’s was at least, but at that moment he placed himself right with the stallion as well. He couldn’t see anyone else riding the horse, and neither could the girls walking beside him if he did express the idea. Him and Kalum went together like the wood pieces in the Lincoln Logs playsets he used to obsess over as a kid. They were the original lego, and he still had some of the original sets his grandparents had played with. They distracted him from time to time. Just like the though was now. And with one last smile he led the horse to the stalls with the rest of the group, still smiling like a madman and proud as he had ever been in his life.

(So long but I might split it if I can get any other art done the next few weeks)
