Description
Kinavara’s Kalumburu and Lincoln Wheeler (someone please kick me to draw his ref) Competing at
Shark Week in the Show Jumping division.
Story:
“Are you sure this is a good idea? He’s young, he’s really young Belle.” Lincoln spoke, he was dragging the tacking up process along. “I don’t want to hurt him. He’s only jumped this height a few times,” he tried bargaining. He had been asking her about this class and why she had signed him and the young stallion up for it in the first place. He didn’t think this was a step in the right direction for the young stallion, and while he knew he would be okay with one class he didn’t feel comfortable doing this.
“For the last time Lincoln, it’ll be okay. He can handle one class. He can handle this height, and if not, then that’s fine. You’ve ridden this height before Lincoln.” The older woman spoke, her eyes narrowed as she looked at the male rider, she didn’t like this doubt, she didn’t like it when someone doubted her decisions. Kalum was still under her name, until she had a few nice mares carrying a few of his babies, then he would be transferred to Lincoln. But until then? He was still her own and she still would be making one-hundred percent of his decisions despite what Lincoln said or protested.
“Yes, but I have done it on horses who are properly set up for the class,” he spoke,
“Do you think he isn’t ready Lincoln? I’m paying you to train him. That seems a bit bad on your record there young man.” She turned away but still looked at him over her shoulder.
“You are riding him. I’ll be watching from the audience. I’d like to watch the other competitors to… compare…” she muttered as she walked away.
Lincoln watched, his jaw clenched. He didn’t like this. He didn’t want to rush the horse into having a few foals on the ground so he could handle the young stallion for himself, but he didn’t approve of this or how this was going. He also most definitely did not like the woman questioning his training when he knew full well he was doing his job. He had been on horses from the moment he could sit up straight.
As the woman walked away, Carol made her way up. The girl smiled, looking enthusiastic for the event and watching what she called her ‘favorite boys’ compete. Her approach brought a smile to Lincoln’s face and he tried to hide his tense disposition within seconds, and of course succeeded. A smile made its way to his face, “my favorite groom!” He exclaimed, and grinned as she started to help get the jumping boots on the horse.
“And my favorite pair, other than Lilli and Millie of course. You both hold a special place in my heart…” she teased, grabbing a rag from her grooming bag and giving him a small whack with the rag before putting it back and crouching back down to help get the boots on. The horse had his saddle on, and he stood patiently, his head turning to nicker at carol before nibbling on Lincoln’s shirt before the man could pull away.
“What did you say to Bell?” Carol asked, trying to keep the smile from coming off her face. “I saw the look on her face, it looked like you just told her she can’t ride a horse. Not that she can…” Carol only grinned, grumbling the last part under her breath.
“Hey now, it’s not that she can’t ride, we just have never actually seen her ride. She seemed like she was pretty successful before she retired. And … I told her I didn’t think it was a good idea to jump Kalum at this height, and it isn’t, right?” He asked, looking down at Carol and crossing his arms.
“I told you to stop questioning yourself Lincoln. You can’t doubt yourself, and the ‘right?’ Only proves otherwise.” Carol shot him a look which only caused him to sigh and roll his eyes, “yeah… oh well. We are doing it. But anyways… Do you want to go on a walk later? I have a feeling this round isn’t going to go well and I sort of want to set up an appointment with my oh so generous therapist in advance.” He teased, a grin on his face as he watched her stand up right once again from putting the boots on.
“Hmmm tonight? Well let me see… I suppose that will work out. Yeah. Right while the sun is setting? If you are done by then?” She spoke, getting a bit excited. A walk with Lincoln? It sounded nice.
“Yeah, let’s do it then, I’m sure I will be done.” He smiled, and grabbed the bridle for his stallion, slipping it over his head carefully.
“Let’s get you showing then…” Carol smiled, and started to help hold Kalum so Lincoln could climb up in the saddle.
“It’s only one class, I can tell you are stressed, take a few breaths and realize Kalum is a safe ride, you know him inside out, like the back of your hand, you got this” her words were soft, and she stood beside him with a grin, giving him a small nod before moving his hand down in a fist, and only smiling as Carol did the same, bumping her own with his and making a pow noise when they pulled their hands away, opening them as they did.
“Yeah, it’ll be fine, I know it will. He’s a good horse.” He chuckled, and they made their way towards the ring for warm up.
The sun was starting to come over the horizon, and everything was bathed in pink and oranges as the warmup ring was gradually filled with more riders preparing with their rounds. Kalum made his way around the ring, moving with the motions with a lovely attitude. He was amazing at staying focused in the ring, allowing himself to only keep his mind on his rider and what was asked of him. As they made their way around, Lincoln’s confidence was on a roller coast. One step they were okay, they would be fine, and the next he wasn’t so sure, his mind went to the worst possible situations. A bad fall, Kalum injuring himself, and the disappointment on everyone’s faces. His eyes went up for a moment, noticing a rider and his horse going past. He focused more on the rider, he was a middle aged man, handsome but confident. He wanted that, not the man- no- the confidence. Or both? Yeah no. Definitely just the confidence. He watched for a little too long before suddenly Kalum slammed on the brakes, just barely avoiding a collision with another rider who gave him a look as they brushed by. Oops. He took a shaky breath before continuing forward with the stallion, holding him carefully under him.

Thank you so much! And yes he does. He also needs to learn to trust his gut in more ways than one. That will definitely help him overcome a bit of negativity

I use procreate, so I just put the technical pen up to the largest it could go and started to draw lines where the shading and lighting was then used a soft brush to erase areas so it wasn’t so strong!! I also used different colors for the lighting and worked my way from the darkest color up to the lightest! (I hope that makes sense)
Thank you so so much!!
