Description
The Old Testament commandment "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" was declared by the Lord Jesus to be one of the two most important commandments. Whoever keeps this commandment and the commandment to love God with all his heart and soul and strength has accomplished the whole will of God.So simple to understand and yet so difficult to live!
Or is it easy to understand?
Apparently not, because it really gets on my nerves how some people have to complicate such clearly understandable commandments!
Some think that this commandment "you shall love your neighbor as yourself!" is an excuse for selfishness and that you have to really, really, really learn to love yourself before you can start loving your neighbor.
Others, however, claim that it is unchristian to love oneself and try to make it seem with the most stupid Bible acrobatics that this commandment does not even say that one should love oneself or they take a Bible verse completely out of context (Ephesians 5:29) and claim that there are no people who hate themselves anyway and therefore no one has to learn to love themselves first.
Often (but not always) it is exactly these preachers who tell everyone that it is unchristian to love oneself, who seem to have such an inflated ego that there would be enough for their whole church if they shared this ego with their congregation...
To counter this is the following:
1.) The mind darkened by the power of sin is not only trapped in destructive egosimus, but also often in destructive self-hatred. Every experienced counselor knows this.
2) The way out of egoism is not altruism - it is just as pathological, only in the opposite way. The antidote to egoism and altruism is the biblical commandment "you shall love your neighbor as yourself", that is, you may and should love yourself! By the way, it would be a sin not to love yourself, because after all, God created you wonderful and He loves you! So if you don't love yourself, then you contradict God and that would be a sin.
So love yourself and love yourself more every day! BUT love your neighbor in the same measure every day more! Because the more you love yourself, the more this commandment obliges you to love your neighbor as well!
If you succeed in this, then you bring a piece of heaven on this earth!
This is easy to understand, but difficult to live...
