The Romans had a similar law, the Pater Familias had nigh total power over his offspring, he could sell them into slavery, dictate who they married and command divorce he could also order a newborn to be exposed i.e. thrown out to die. Β Later on after the creation of the Twelve Tables of law they had a rule that if a father sold his son a certain number of times the boy was to be free from his father's authority.

you know, I've read through the Bible both as a Christian and an ex-Christian and what's strange is that I actually find it easier to enjoy and appreciate Biblical text from a secular point of view than from that of a believer. that particular verse in Ephesians is one that has always been troubling for me as a believer. but some of the imagery and language in the Bible is really quite beautiful and before I gave myself permission to say, "well, some parts of the Bible are just plain wrong" I never would have been able to appreciate them or to utilize the imagery in my work as I do today.
it's like having a medieval fantasy movie you really enjoy. you can never truly appreciate the costume and set design, the pacing and plot if you pretend you're watching a documentary film the entire time.

The bible is full of incredible mythology and fantastic history when viewed objectively rather than filtered through theology. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Christian fundamentalists, as We used to be, simply cannot do out of fear.
