even as a Christian I have to agree with this...so many of our priests (historically) haven't had a back bone. They don't deserve their platform.
Now, I've met some people on the street...some of them have an illness which makes the...unruly. but I don't care, I forgive them. But I've met some nice homeless people.
The only priest I've ever believed was a hero was Father Thomas Byles...and an ancestor in my family who'll remain nameless. But I'll be modest and say Father Byles was the better man.

Hey seriously, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Been a while since I made this and so my perspective has changed. I'm no longer in the business of shouting down any and all christians just for the sake of attempting to destroy their faith.Β
These days I seek civil discourse, and you did just that. Thanks. For what it's worth, I saw it and appreciated it. And if there is some sort of all loving creator god, then it saw it too.
Take care.

Yeah, I didn't know that you had that temptation to shout out any and all Christians. Yeah, I've met plenty of those kinds of atheists (the same people who will accuse me of the same thing -_-). And while it's tiring, it's a learning experience for both. But I'm glad you've changed your ways. Because that sort of thing helps no one. Not just atheists but everyone needs to stop doing that.
I want civil discourse. The social landscape is pure bullshit nowadays. People rioting and destroying stuff over beliefs. It's ridiculous! It's like no one can tolerate an opposing viewpoint! for real...
But while I am here, I just wanted to make a callout. Yes, our priests have been primarily cowards. Not going to deny it. Maybe even deceptive. I can only name a few priests I know of whom are genuinely good people. Heck, the one I mentioned, Thomas Byles? He was a priest on board the Titanic who laid down his life to spiritually (and physical) save passengers. Not many priests...scratch that...not many PEOPLE have that kind of dedication and courage. Maybe my courage might fail me in that scenario.
That being said, I don't hate our priests....I'm just disappointed in them. They should be better. I forgive them as I should, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to call them out for what they do.
Thanks

Are you saying begging on the street is wrong but begging in a Church is right?

No. I'm saying that they are both beggars yet the Pastor somehow is noble and the bum on the street is a vagabond. It's commentary on society. Sarcasm.Β

Faith without works is dead and works without faith are in vain. Sounds contradicting, but if one is gonna preach, he's gonna need to be called under God's authority to do it, and to not be doing good works for one's own "good" image, or ego. The superficial preachers out there make us believers look bad; they make it look as if Christ is only for the rich and pretty, which is why God will judge the fake pastor more harshly than he will the unbeliever when that day comes. Christ is for anyone who wants him.Β

I seem to recall a bit in the Bible: "Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven, but woe unto the wealthy, for they have their reward on Earth", and, "It is easier for a camel* to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go to heaven." Hypocrites, the lot of them, cherry-picking the bits they like and ignoring passages like these.
*The word in the original Greek might be mistranslated; some scholars think the author meant to say ship's cable or hawser, (the one tied to stempost and sternpost to stay the mainmast) as is the more likely translation.

Mega churches and flashy preachers make me sick, and not just because I'm a Christian, either. Their works and gall is evident in everything they do. Reminds me of the Ray Stevens song that says, "...asking me for twenty, with ten thousand on his wrist."

Thank you sincerely for your comment. I'm not 'mad' at god or church or anything along those lines anymore. I don't even label myself an atheist; or anything for that matter. But yes, the mega church turns my stomach and seems to be a stark contrast to the words of Jesus. Thank you again!

Holy crap. Right on. Keep up the good work, Pitner.
That little bit of mistrust? Is why I prefer giving to individual beggars directly.Β

The false churches. I thought Christ said to give and help the homeless.

I hate it when I see those T.V. Preachers begging for money. Whenever you watch them wait to see if they start telling you to send them cash, if they do then they are no better then con-men. Most of them aren't even men of God. They can just "preach" and people like what they say. Mostly they are what you would call "feel good" churches.

That is spot on. I knew a guy in the city I lived in who would beg and sleep under a road bridge and he would always have a "need help, Jesus bless" sign with him. One day I just had to ask him, "Bro, do you really believe in any of that stuff?" He smiled pointed his cup at me and said "Bless you sir!"

A problem I have is that, in the United States, there is no reason you should be homeless. We have charity and welfare programs, soup kitchens, safe-houses, etc. that will help get the homeless on their feet: give them and education, a home, a job, and whatever else is necessary. Also, people who donate to pastors are really just paying to keep the churches going, they aren't free. Most pastors make less than $20,000 a year and give the rest to charities. However, mega-churches are a different story. I still agree with the sentiment. If someone who preaches to be a "good Christian" and donates to church, surely they can help out a homeless person.

Very fair points. Keep in mind, however, a fairly large portion of the homeless population are mentally ill or have some sort of psychological issue that contributes to their plight.Β

I am aware of that. There are also programs and homes for the mentally unstable as well, but unfortunately, a lot of people do not know they can get help, which is why we still have homeless people despite resources.

So what does this prove? It proves that mainstream is the problem, the book clearly sez God's people will be shunned, so then....who are these big heads in "Christianity"?
