Description
ey yo. this lil drarwin here is my attempt at conceptual architecture.its very hard for me to convey a sense of massive scale. i think im getting there though. basically this is an intensly urbanised area. think of downtown los angeles, and multiply multiply it by about 150. thats the basic sprawl section you see. all teh jazz at the bottom.
then at the center of the city is this MASSIVE construct of buildings and crap all hodgepodged together. its probably more of a dirty architecture thing, it wouldnt be clean or slick at all.
n e ways. im doin this as a reference for a painting. ill be turning this into an 18x24 acrylic painting for class. but im also using this as my first sorta concept drawing for an upcoming cyberpunk short film im workin on with some kids.
fun

like the way the sprawl of buildings below is reflected in the tall main building

I like it in thumbnail. When brought to full size I think the ground-level buildings look good but the big one looks very rough. Conceptually though it's a very nice image. Makes me think I want a good image of the Bridge from the William Gibson novels.

"the corporate dictators sit atop thier skyscraper fortresses, policing the globe with mass produced super-soldier cyborgs."
thats a line from a cyberpunk rp im doing, and i think this conveys that perfectly.

It's hundreds of times more attactive than the massive tacky, imposing, clunky, plain, glass block monstrosity/eyesore they plan to start building in Louisville next year.

But,
most people seem to like it, so, go figure
I guess people in Louisville are easy to impress as long as a design comes from a big important famous Manhattan Island Architectural firm.
But I digress your tower resembles a mechanical part a bit and really looks as if it were designed/created by a computerized artificial intelligence.

I really like it!
This is probably the physicist in me speaking but,
allthough it looks cool I find it hard to imagine how such a structure can stand. The only solution i can think of is that the structure is superlightweigth with somekind of levitationdevice (e.g. helium) on a low gravity planet with allmost no wind. But why woldn't the architects but in a few pillars instead of wasting huge amount of space with helium balloons?

If you try to use perfect iron and dimond strands, this thing is possible on a low-G world....although, I'm sure it's outside even Gates' budget..

I think the buildings down low could be a bit better, they look a bit "cartoony" to me (X-ept if you wanted them that way).
But, the multi-skyscraper is very well done! And the sky, too...What an enchanting sky! thumbsup:

You've got the scale thing working because of the gigantamo moon all in focus and in my face. The mishmash of real building photos is creepy. I could see myself standing in one. I would feel the 'neathlings of steel and pulsating building meat push up thru the ground liek the roots of very strong trees.

like it lots, esp the composition and balance.
mm. crit:
its too loose. Your almost-random usage of custom brushes and the photo collage at the bottom dont mix well, and detract the eye from the sense of realism at hand. Lighting....? And Perspective
________________
PS: Perhaps thinking about the thoughts that go thru your mind when you did this may bounce off some of the reasoning you made recently on my work...
simple Casey its a sketch.
Its good as a sketch, and it conveys just the right amout of everything. whether that building looks like its slightly flat or not is besides the point. I dont even bother pointing that out to ya bro. Cause i know, YOU know, that it looks flat. But what i Know, YOU know, is that its a concept, loose, yet particularly focused on the points you want to bring out in the work.
These, to me, are the true fundamentals ppl need to understand more of.

haha. this sounds almost like a retalitory comment! i love it!
as far as the crit goes, that kind of brutal almost spiteful negativity that you tossed out there, that raw intensity, is what I as an artist need to grow.
perhaps you dont like it if i say something here or there, but if you truly mean what you say, and you have the knowledge and ability to backup your thoughts, then the worst gunshot-to-the-face comment is worth 1,000,000,000 "oh thats great your amazing" comments.
brutal criticism is what i live for. the people who cant handle that drop out of artschool.

lol, it wasnt retaliatory, it was an example.
i did 2 things:
1) honestly sat down and crit/commended your work
2) brought this, particularly this piece cause i liked it, and cause i felt it mirrored many things i would look at or do in my sketches; to your attention -regarding what you did crit in my work, so its a 2 way thing really. (for you to also self-reflect and perhaps understand my situation better)
"perhaps you dont like it if i say something here or there, but if you truly mean what you say, and you have the knowledge and ability to backup your thoughts, then the worst gunshot-to-the-face comment is worth 1,000,000,000 "oh thats great your amazing" comments."
agreed!
BUT...
"brutal criticism is what i live for"
not agreed. brutal deconstructive crit kills you. may not be emotionally, if you are thick-skinned, but physically, too. Constructive crit, knowing and putting yourself in others' shoes does go a long way. thats why few can 'tutor' compared to the many who can 'teach'. Knowing why a student does what he does, the WAY he does, and applying it to the way and principles surrounding how you approach the problem is everything to both parties..!
Now perhaps im ignorant of how art school is like, but i doubt design school is much different in terms of academic attitude.. and thus, is the basis of how i choose my words.
thanks for your time as well
