Description this is a composite of 4 different pages of conceptual design ideas for my Drawing the Fantastic class.

the project is an update of War of the Worlds. We approached this project as if we were designing, and visually writing a new script based on the H.G. Wells. We were actually conceptually drafting it as if it would ultimately become a film. It was a great project to work on.

The first assignment was to design the alien. After everone put their stuff up, the teacher would go through and pick the best one. I wanted to have as many different ideas as possible. He would up picking me, and two other students to bring our ideas together and draft a final alien. Ill be posting that stuff soon!

These are pretty cool! I like marginals! You have a nice array here, although some look pretty similar to others. I guess that's the point of sketching them all out first

some of them are definatly very similar. there were certain design elements that i wanted to keep throughout the process. i started with a certain variation, and as the drawings evolved, i decided that in order for it to retain the human emotional element we wanted to present, it would have to be somewhat humanoid.

that knocked out several things, but still theres lots of stuff u can do with a biped. the last page (bottom right corner) is mostly trying out several variations on a similar body type. i was refining the helmet and body design at that point. yeah. anyways.

the best thing about doing things like this is i produced 50+ different aliens in a couple hours time. where as everyone else in my class did between 1and 3 in the same amount of time. sure they were rendered more, but i was trying to capture the essence.

anyways, blah blah blah. ill take this as an oppurtunity to say thanks for all of your comments! much appreciated!!

Yeah, I think a lot of small sketches are better for designing a character body because it gives you a lot of opportunity go pick a few key designs to flesh out later. I tried something similar recently and it panned out really well.

Quite a menagerie of monsters. They're so small, it's hard not to start looking at them as 'cute li'l things.' And a lot of them do have big heads like babies. Which makes for an interesting contrast between general impression and what you see when you actually look at each.
