Note: I'm not back permanently, I'm just taking the opportunity to upload this now. XD
I wanted to wait a bit longer when I had a few more of these done, but I needed an opinion on the look of the character before I continue on with the other characters.
For the new comic series, I wanted to try for a more serious look to Sonic beyond just drawing him that way, ~zexous did a fantastic job with the lineart, but I tried this new coloring style as an example of the aesthetic I was going for. The overall mood of the comic is darker, and rather than going with the bold, vibrant cel-shading I'm known for, I went for softer shading with more muted colors to get that across, as well as black shadows and a new way to ink it. I wasn't sure if this type of look suited Sonic and wanted to know what the viewers thought.

I absolutely adore your smooth inking - it's just so subtle and yet bold an' powerful. Gorgeous~
What I really love is the inking/shadowing you did here, too. Makes 'im really stand out, and coupled with the stunning colouring, it's just mind-blowingly beautiful.

The black shading looks a little strange to me, because it looks like you've given him black markings on his spikes and arms (like Shadow's red markings) ...that's what I thought it was until I read the comments. Also wouldn't big long baggy boots hamper his agility somewhat?

I see what you mean. You can look to the source of inspiration for this inking and coloring style, it's not too far fetched. Looking at the concept art from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 you'll see I tried something similar but I admit it's not the best, it needs work to say the least.
As for the boots, you can look to the art style's influence in Dissidia: Final Fantasy concept art, where the lineart looks sharp and clothes appear loose fitting, though I assure you the boots are more solid than they appear.

Ah, well Marvel comics saw me through my teens, so I know the kind of art you mean. The shading isn't so bold so far as I remember though.
I'm still not sold on the boots though. Influences are cool, we can't avoid them, but why paste fashions and trends from a different universe into another one with seemingly no explanation?
I'm not adverse to changes in character's appearances, but I do prefer them to have something to do with the story. (soap shoes gave Sonic new skills, and Riders' shoes were connected with the airboards.)

Well, listen, the boots are not influenced by a particular style or fashion. They are simply meant to change what little articles of clothing Sonic has in some way show the passage of time. I'm not a fan of Sonic's "invincible kicks," that avoid getting scuffed or stained, especially when SEGA infers that he's had the same shoes since Adventure except, like you said, Adventure 2, and are just as pristine as if he bought them that day. In five years, those sneakers are long since trashed and he's aqcuired a new pair of sturdy boots to accomodate his tremendous leg strength at this age and to resist the friction generated from running so fast.
One of the explainations I can offer is that he got tired of sneakers and favored a new look, it's also a character design choice: seeing as Sonic has more real estate on his body in this style we had to make his shoes taller to keep the ratio of what's covered on Sonic and what's not right lest it appear awkward, it would honestly look weird on this taller more masculine Sonic to have those same shoes, they would look so small on him, so take your pick. xD
In that sense, I'm aware that Sonic's shoes are supposed to be "hyper friction resistant" or however the Wikia puts it, but this seems like convenient answer on SEGA's or Archie Comic's part to explain why they never deteriorate and an excuse to render/draw them super shiny and clean all the time. The same thing you spoke about can be said about the shoes Sonic and the gang wore in Riders, they were cosmetic more than functional, to show the passage of time into a slightly more advanced society, the proof lying in that the didn't even know what an Extreme Gear was until after Sonic's botched pursuit of the Babylon Rogues. How could they aqcuire something to be used for something else they didn't know existed yet?
Also, you should look specifically at Marvel vs. Cacpcom 3 style, not the comic's style, the coloring on the game's art is incredibly bold.

Even though the design and colouring are amazing!
I am not too hot on how he looks like that.
Why does he have a scar?
He is Sonic, the world fastest hedgehog.
He is so fast no one can catch him and beat him up that badly.
Also if the stories takes place in the current time, then he looks too tall and too old.
Sonic is around 15 years old and not 20.

Sonic is indeed 20 in this picture, the story of Sonic Elips does take place 5 years in the future from part of the series where he's 15 as a "what-if" story. So your comment tells me that ~zexous and I are heading in the right direction.
As for the scar, think, who's the only character in the series who's even close to matching Sonic's speed, and you'll have your answer. XD

Yep, then it is a very good indication that you two are on the right course.
If you mean Shadow, then he wouldn't be the character you are referring too.
Shadow may not like Sonic very much, but at the same time he has no grudge against him.
Also he is not evil, but a character with neutral affinity to either good or evil.
He isn't the right guy in mind.
After the events of Sonic Heroees I doubt Metal Sonic is in active mode.
Seeing what he did to his master and creator and all.
So again I can't see how Sonic could get his scar.

Well, then I apologize because if it's that hard to accept that than you're going to have a tough time understanding the story of Elips. XD
I'm well aware of Sonic and Shadow's sorted past, as you are, and I'd hope you'd agree with me that nearly every encounter, the two hedgehog's fight, friendly or not with friends or alone, they fight. The only reason they haven't fought lately is Shadow's convenient absence in the lastest games. Even in his latest rumored appearance in Generations, they are, you guessed it, fighting. XD And their relationship is more so of tolerance than true friendship, especially considering their relationship in the games as opposed to the comics, which our comic is based on the games with little comic influence. So it shouldn't be true too far of a stretch to say that Shadow did give it to him. Now, you are very correct that Shadow is neutral in alliances and have no reason beyond personal purpose to harm him in any way, but telling the specifics as to why would spoil the story, the reason being a rather major plot point.
Sorry, if I came off as a bit rude or know-it-all'y. Just trying to explaining it as logically as I can without spoiling too much. 
Oh, and Metal Sonic is long since decommissoned in this time line, he wouldn't be a threat to Sonic at this age. XD

And yes, me and ~zexous have thought this out thoroughly. We did a lot of research and tried to make a coherrent and consistant series out of all the information in the Sonic universe. I think people will be happy with it.

I find the boots to be a bit silly and over the top, but otherwise this pretty neat. I like that it seems like he has more body mass than usual.
