The first collage map I have made, still experimenting on the style so far.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The POD is that during the anti-Gorbachev 1991 August Coup Attempt in the Soviet Union, the Gang of Eight managed to pull enough support to create a standoff between them and the pro-Gorbachev and anti-party faction. After heavy fighting in the streets of Moscow, the pro-party faction, led by Gennady Yanayev prevailed. During the infighting, the Baltic and Caucasian republics broke off from the USSR. Facing a crisis, Yanayev was hastily elected as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet and General Secretary in 1991, with the other various positions distributed to his fellow Gang of Eight members. Immediately, the Union faced another crisis in Ukraine. Conflict between pro-independence and pro-Soviet factions escalated into a civil war in December of 1991. The government intervened in the conflict immediately, shelving other similar ones in the independent republics in favor as what it saw as a potentially existential threat in Ukraine. The separatists were crushed with brutal efficiency, and the minority areas in the Ukrainian SSR, such as the Budjak and Zakarpatya oblasts were elevated into full ASSRs for helping the Soviet government in the war. A similar thing happened to Moldova, where they were reincorporated into the Union with the assistance of the Transnistrians and Gagauzes.
Unfortunately, the Soviets expended all their agression on Ukraine and Moldova, where a short Soviet-Estonian conflict was halted by the intervention of NATO, who put all the Baltic states under their protection. In 1993, due to Yanayev being seen as increasingly indecisive, he was replaced as General Secretary of the CPSU by the Minister of Defense and Hero of the Ukrainian War, Dmitry Yazov. Yazov consolidated his new rule, and although Yanayev is still the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet, and the various other GO8 leaders were still mostly in power, Yazov is at this point the unquestioned leader of the country. After putting down separatists in the Caucasus, a referendum of the creation of a new SSR was put forth to stabilize the region. Thus, the North Caucasian SCSR (Soviet Confederal Socialist Republic) was formed, which is unique because it is not based on a single, dominant ethnicity. It was also created to promote Soviet designs in the Southern Caucasus.
In the Georgian Civil War, the Soviets intervened in the side of anti-Georgian separatists. This basically led to the decisive conclusion of the war. Due to not wanting to cause too much outrage, the Soviets forced Georgia to concede the independence of Abkhazia, and the autonomy of South Ossetia. Abkhazia almost immediately joined the North Caucasian SCSR. After finally achieving peace, Yazov's government put forward the policy of ukrepleniye, which is closing the borders of the country and limiting all trade, basically turning the Soviet Union into an international pariah state. However, trade relations with countries such as Cuba, Vietnam, and India are kept. This led to the collapse of many socialist states outside the USSR, such as Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and Nicaragua. In 1995, a new constitution was passed, referred to by outsiders as the Yazov Constitution. The new constitution includes new restrictions on party membership and mandatory ideological training. This was also followed by a series of further purges and arrests of party members. Due to this, many called Yazov a neo-Stalinist. A short while later, the ASSRs of the Idel-Ural voted to create an SCSR, following on the precedent of North Caucasia.
