Description
The Arrangement of Obento.Traditionally it is made in a 4: 3: 2: 1 ration: 4 parts rice, 3 parts side (fish or meat), 2 parts vegetables, and 1 part of picked vegetables or dessert. But really you can put just about anything you want inside.
For this tutorial i used a sort of two halfs. one half is the 4 parts rice, the other half makes up the 3 parts side, 2 parts veggi, & 1 part dessert.
Foods used: Homemade Shrimp tempura, short grained white rice, egg furikake, salad *lettace, spinich, carrot, avacado* egg, and peach hard candy.
Really, you can arrange obento in any shape or form you like. Creativity is up to you. this tutorial is to just give an idea or give you a beginner's start.
Tutorial based off of ~sake-bento 's version.

Do you think it would be strange if I got a bento and brought it to school? (I don't have Japanese heritage and I'm American, but I think they're cute )

you don't have to be of japanese heritage to bring bento to your school/work. I myself don't find it strange but that is me and not someone else. i don't think most people in america would know what bento is so they may be interested in why you have such a cute lunch!

Nishiki rice is what i use. You can use jasmine but you have to work at it and it dries out after a day. best to use a medium grain rice or Nishiki or this other brand.... i can't remember the name but its also a japanese type rice.

i think that is simular to jasmine rice. check to see where it was produced and whether if it tells if it is medium grain rice or long. you definately don't want long... nor do you want short grain cuz thats mainly for deserts really.

XD originally i thought so, too. but after watching a few cooking shows i quickly relized that short grain rice is mainly used for sweets/deserts. reason for this is because it is so glutinous. medium grain is best used but never use long grain... it has the least ammount of gluten. XD nu prob

I know you must get this question a lot but, can you microwave the bento box? or dose it keep it warm? I got a cute hello kitty bento from a friend but i never had the chance to ask her.. sorry for the inconvenience

Corselia In reply to forsakenbutterfly [2008-06-14 09:27:17 +0000 UTC]
yes its fine, just don't put it in a oven of any type. most bento's are microwavable and dishwasher safe.

If you live near a Japanese market like [link] , they most likely sell bentobako there. If not, ask for a prepaid Mastercard or Chase card for X-mas/Your B-day and use that to order online. XDDD
