Description
It was really fun to let creativity, natural history research, and personal observations gradually guide me to develop a composition for this drawing. The scene shows the forest floor of Blue Hills Reservation, MA in spring, including: a Red Admiral Butterfly, a Pink Lady's Slipper, a Copperhead, greenshield lichens, Northern Red Oak leaves, Pincushion Moss, a fallen Flowering Dogwood blossom, a Bold Jumping Spider, and British Soldier Lichens.
I wanted to portray a Copperhead specifically because it's an endangered species in Massachusetts, and the other species because they exude a springtime energy which we could all surely benefit from right now. Venomous snakes deserve our respect and admiration. Give them space, admire from a distance, and advocate for snakes whenever you can.
