Because they both produce a few notes, though they are all flat, and you would nevar find one with the wrong end facing forward

I love this quote and was happy to hear the "answer" when a friend finally figured it out, "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!β
I shorten it to, "because they are nevar put wrong end frontwards", because I'm weird like that. But my friend had to point out the way "never" had been spelled, "nevar", instead, when I didn't get it. 'Twas quite clever on Carroll's part.

They both have inky quills.
Poe wrote on both.
The notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.
Neither of them can whistle.
Lewis Carroll originally said that there was no answer to Hatter's riddle.
But so many people asked him the answer so he finally said "They both produce notes which are very flat and are never put with the wrong way front." A very silly answer for a very silly riddle.
