Why is a raven like a writing desk?
Answer: "Because they both collect useless things." ~
More here: [link]

There is no correct answer considering Lewis Carroll admitted that there was no answer intended. Coming up with answers is just for pure amusement. There is no right or wrong answer. You could answer with neither is made of aluminum foil and it would be acceptable.

I know how a raven is like a writing desk-you find some with black ("raven") hair and ask them to bend forward slightly so you can use their back as a solid writing surface

Desk = Ink from the paper, a spill, etc.
Raven = Black as ink.

Lewis Carroll addressed the issue, saying β€œBecause it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!” In the original preface, β€œnever” was spelled β€œNevar,” which is β€œraven” backwards. Carroll's pun was unfortunately lost to the red pen of a proofreader, confusing the issue of the riddle even further. *Is a bit obsessed with Alice in Wonderland*

That's fairly close to the annotation in the Annotated Alice [link] I really like the cover art of the version I gave you a link to but I read an older version that I found in the library I go to. Didn't even know an annotated version existed until then. That book has all the fun facts and information a nerd could ever want to know about Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

"Because both produce notes, even though they are very flat. And they are never placed with the wrong end in front." That was the answer Carroll came up with years later when asked constantly for the answer, even though there wasn't supposed to be one.
