I must say, its definately an improvement from your last one, and I even liked it a good bit (not as much as your other work).
My one bit of crit is the stars look a little dull.
Other than that, you've got a wicked looking planet, explosion, flares, and overall feel.

Not square, sorry. But the stars seem very pixelated.
Actually, after looking in the bottom right coern - some do seem a little square.
Just not as "starlike" as they could be, I guess.

Dunno if this was along his thinking or not, but one reason (that is true to life) that the stars could be dull is due to the brightness of the impact. Similar to light pollution in big cities. Stars look a lot brighter when viewed from someplace in the middle of nowhere than they do in metropolitan areas. Just a thought.
As far as the picture goes, I'm in agreement with most everyone else. This thing rocks. Keep it up. I love the detail!

Wow... the amount of detail in the explosion plume is amazing. (I can see faces, am I insane?) The shock wave looks a bit off to me, when it hits the horizon. If it was circular, then you'd see it curving around for a little bit as it goes over the horizon, but it just cuts off at the horizon. It makes it seem a little pasted on. Other than that, though, brilliant! I love the background (reminds me of sanddunes, strangely). :Thumbsup:
