Sudden silence.
From all the noise. All the breathing.
There is nothing.
Nothing except the blood rushing in his ears.
In a mad panic he had run- run away from them.
Whatever they were.
Those with 2 legs, white coats… ones with cold hands that tried to grab him. Grab him and hurt him. Yelling about hazards and dangerous teeth and claws and glass.
Screaming about terrifying creatures.
Fear.
The first thing he felt was fear.
But now he was in darkness.
He had run to a room that had sealed behind him- and now it was black everywhere he could see.
And silent.
“You’re the one…”
A voice makes him jump. He turns and bares his teeth in sudden fear, looking straight into green, glowing eyes.
“… that everyone’s been waiting for…”
A hedgehog. Black, like him… no, navy blue. With green stripes glowing on his fur and two inquisitive eyes looking back at him. He tilts his head in a curious manner.
“Why are you hiding here?”
Something about his voice. Something makes him calm down. His spines smooth. His hands and shoulders stop being tense.
Softly, he responds.
“There is nothing… nothing but fear in everything. They all fear me… I must be a beast.”
The other hedgehog smiles a little. “You’re an awful lot like me… I like that… to some degree.”
Shadow looks at him closer. Pointed ears, long eyelashes, sharp claws…
He had to admit, they DID look alike.
“If we are so alike, then why are YOU here?” He queries, feeling braver.
The blue hedgehog shifts nervously on the metal frame he is perched upon. The frame holds DNA samples and test tubes and they break the silence with small clinks and rattles. He avoids eye contact with the black and red hedgehog. “I’m defective. You’re not. You’re perfect. Everyone says so. That’s why they’re afraid of you. Perfect creatures didn’t exist until now. You’re the first one.”
He is still confused. “If I am perfect, then what… WHO are you?”
“I’m just your shadow…” the blue hedgehog’s green stripes fizz a little with energy. “I ain’t much more than a loss. Maria calls me Sonic.”
“Sonic…” he lets the name slide off his tongue. He feels a smile form on his muzzle. “I’m Shadow… I’m told I am… who is Maria?”
“She’s a girl. She’s sick. You and I are the result of her needing a cure. She always needs care… but spends her time taking care of others… even me,” Sonic shrugs and chuckles. “She’s the kindest one here.”
Shadow nods. He feels as though he already knows this- about Maria. But he’s still unsure about so much.
“She’ll love you.” Sonic ruffles Shadow’s quills gently. Shadow is startled but doesn’t mind the feeling. “She loves all of us. Everyone else doesn’t. But…” Sonic continues, softer, almost a whisper. “You’re the more important one here. You’re not broken.
They’ll hurt you.
They might love you.
And they will be afraid of you.
Just remember to never be afraid of yourself.”
