Description The three incarnations of The Monk from Doctor Who, Peter Butterworth, Graeme Garden,Β Rufus Hound. I love how they always cast a comedic actor for this role and I would love to see the character make a return to New Who, I mean last time we saw him onscreen was 1966 its about bloody time he started meddling again.

Part of my Time Lord Line up series.

The Monk
The Celestial Toymaker
The War Chief
The Eleven

Hope you like it.

1st Monk showed up with the 1st Doctor in 2 onscreen adventures.
2nd Monk in audio has had run ins with 5th, 6th, 7th and most prominently 8th Doctor.
And 3rd Monk again in audio has jumped all over running into the 2nd 7th and 8th Doctors and probably more I cant remember off top of my head.

For some reason I used to think it wentΒ Butterworth, Hound,Β Garden. But after hearing more audios its got to be Butterworth, Garden, Hound. What do you think?

Sorry, this comment was longer than originally intended. I am a Monk fan lol. I actually wrote A Fan Script Midway through Series 10, Where The Rutans are secretly kidnapping and experimenting on Humans in the sewers of 1930s New Orleans. The Doctor is arrested for a petty reason by a cop on an ego trip and tossed in a holding cell. Nardole and Bill are left for the most part to investigate the strange disappearances with a local Jazz musician. Good Old 12 is saying something funny at a closed door through the bars when he turns around and sees a very miserable (in my mind) Eddie Izzard in the most gaudy outfit from the 1970s. Like a slimy used car salesman. The two look at each other with curiosity when the Doctor starts pointing and laughing at Izzard who is in fact The Monk. 12 keeps asking him what his TARDIS looks like and the Monk smiles and says that it’s stuck as a Red Glasgow Police Box thanks to him sabotaging it during the War. 12 gets pouty cause he was hoping it’d be stuck as a Porto John or Something. I had a serious think about the Monks TARDIS and chose a Glasgow police box with the idea that the BBC would wanna save money and just paint one of the other TARDIS props Red. The Doctor does have a habit of sabotaging the Monks TARDIS as well. Anyway, The Monk tells the Doctor about the Rutans and that they Have his TARDIS, but can’t get in. The Monk is actually innocent here and was just in New Orleans cause his favorite restaurant is there. When he discovered the Rutans plot, he realized he needed help getting his TARDIS back so he went to the authorities, they arrested him believing he was drunk or crazy. Begrudgingly the two agree to help each other stop the Rutans. The Monk however gets to his TARDIS the first chance he gets leaving 12 and his companions to save the day. I imagined the Monk as a recurring rival, not the Master, but as the Conservative to The Doctors Liberal so you speak. I never saw the Monk as evil and I’m pretty sure he has even saved a few planets...for a price or out of personal well being. I also see the Monk having the infamous Leopard Print Console Room.Β

No need to apologies for enthusiasm. Sounds interesting and Eddie Izzard's a good pick for a future Monk. My pick for a 4th Monk would be Steve Coogan. As for The Monks TARDIS, I recently made The Monks in Lego and gave them a portable Pipe Organ for a TARDIS. Just seems appropriate to have his TARDIS be something to do with the church.

Well, if Izzard took the role now, it would have to be the β€œMeddling Nun”, from what I’ve heard.

Rufus Hound's version was hilarious.Β  "Pesky Angels..."Β  A very underappreciated Time Lord - I do enjoy seeing him get a bit of love!Β  Very cool!

Hi, are you planning to do the Unbound Doctors?

CosmicThunder In reply to mambasnake [2018-03-20 23:29:08 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't thinking about it but could be fun. plus there's only 4 of them. well technically 6 but ones a "past incarnation" and the other just shows up to get shot.Β

Thank you for this great piece! The Monk is so underrated, yet in my opinion he is the best recurring Time Lord character after the Master. Amazing in his first appearance as a Meddling nuisance and equally amazing as the man who almost destroyed Earth to gather art in BF. I even sided with him against the Doctor in "Deimos / The Resurrection of Mars".

Yeah I like how he's no so much cruel or vindictive like The Master or The Rani, he's just selfish and will fully ignorant of the damage his meddling could cause. And he only meddles because ether he thinks it will help, for profit or just because its fun to see what happens.

I know about the later incarnations, but I haven't heard the other two on Big Finish. Yeah, I hope the Monk does come back, I can see a lot of potential for him to meddle. Are you planning on doing more?

If you mean will I be doing anymore Doctor Who illustrations in this style? Then oh yeah, I'm doing a lot more. The Three Monks are a very small piece of a much larger project. However, if you mean will I be doing more mug shot line ups? I don't know, to be fair I probably will do when I have the other Time Lords of note drawn.Β

How about the Rani? Then again, you can do The Eleven or Drax?

CosmicThunder In reply to mambasnake [2017-10-07 23:13:14 +0000 UTC]

Defiantly The Rani probably not Drax and I all ready have The Eleven drawn so could do a mug shot for him maybe. Side note The Eleven is such a cool concept for a Time Lord villain.Β

Who's the Eleven? I assume he's from a Big Finish Audio Drama, but I've never heard of him before

CosmicThunder In reply to Vulcangirl327 [2017-10-11 20:48:05 +0000 UTC]

The Eleven is from the Doom Coalition saga and is an escaped criminal Time Lord currently in his Eleventh incarnation. However, all ten of his previous selves are still active in his head trying to control him and it's driven him mad as the centuries have gone on and more voices have been added to the mix.

mambasnake In reply to CosmicThunder [2017-10-08 06:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he is - a Time Lord who has all of his previous 10 lives vying for control in his body - one telling him to kill, kill, kill, and one trying to say "Don't do it, become a good man." I don't blame you for not doing Drax - in The Trouble With Drax only a few of his incarnations made themselves known.Β
