After the conclusion of the first civil war, the Novian armed forces rapidly found themselves in need of domestically produced body armor.

The M1 Protective Ensemble (nicknamed the "Loaf" by Novian troops) was a combination of head gear designed to provide the maximum level of protection while minimizing cost and weight. The setup was completely modular, consisting of the helmet, hearing protection, goggles, and face mask. Overall, the included components were far simpler than their Earth Union counterparts. The face mask used a fan-assisted filter as opposed to a valve system, the hearing protection and goggles were self-contained, not relying on the rest of the ensemble for power, and the helmet could be used effectively without the other components.

However, the setup was not air tight. As a result, the old Earth Union MkII helmets continued to be used by Novian marine units well into the interwar period.
