I thought "wouldn't the armour keep the lightning from frying the earth pony, and putting a not-surrounded-by-conductive-material pegasus in the way just means the pegasus gets more hurt?" but then I looked it up and unless it's a proper Faraday cage, wearing something with metal in it is really bad for when you're hit by lightning.
Of course, we are talking about magical ponies so real science doesn't actually matter much.

Well, yeah, if I was going to head into the everfree forest during a lightning storm, I'd be going for the complete Faraday cage provided by a full set of chainmail.
Come to think of it, do ponies have chainmail? It's probably more difficult to make than plate armour when you don't have opposable thumbs...

Normally you wear padding under armour (stops chaffing, extra protection etc) I'm guessing this would stop you getting fried.
Also chainmails easy to make when your a unicorn P

That too, but mostly you just want to get the charge to move from the top of your head to the ground below your feet as fast as it can, and you want it to avoid any vital organs while it makes that trip.
Well, being the weakest of the three pony races probably isn't that good for blacksmithing, so generally I'd expect a blacksmith to be an earth pony as big as Big Mac, wielding a hammer the size of everything forever. Awesome for forging plate armour, not so awesome for making millions of tiny loops.
