I think I know why. Sunset Shimmer was probably able to manipulate him since he's a teenage boy, he's a social guy in high school with charisma among his peers and Sunset wanted to get somewhere in the ranks by using him. So she tricked him into thinking she was a good girl, but he eventually found out after a bit and dumped her. Maybe it's part of the implications that the movie has. He's clumsy at first, but can quickly figure stuff out and recover from it.

yeah that probably why she is the kind of person that would do that. i also think that sunset shimmer also dated the pony version of flash sentry before she first went into the human world. i also think that the pony flash broke up with her for the same reasons the human flash did
