Description red chalk drawing

The concept behind a self-portrait represents a forum for the artist to enter into a discussion with him/herself and to get to know the inner self pictorially in an introspective act of self-awareness.
This implies, however, the assumption that a self-portrait is an authentic representation. But the often invoked 'soul' of an artist can only be regarded as a starting point for an artwork, as a motive or stimulus - but both the soul and self-portrait cannot be put on the same level, nor can they be regarded as a reflection of each other, as then these categories would otherwise intermingle.

Self-portraits always deal with the self-representation of an artist, the element, however, that creates art is only one feature, the other facets are missing in self-portraits like in all other mises- en- scène.

Very nice work, Chris! ....From the pictures you have posted of yourself, and the glimpse of your personality you've given us, this is exactly to a 'tee' how I see you.

You are most welcome,
I don't think I could ever find the courage to do it...
I admire you for it

Self portraits can be very difficult because we don't see ourselves as others see us nor do we see ourselves with the objectivity that we see others.  Therefore I applaud your efforts (which turned out really well, btw)

and I agree with the others... the sepia tone was a good choice for this

Thank you, Carrie!^^
That's a tricky thing, right! But the most difficult thing about doing a self-portrait is to put something personal into it, from the inner self or the spirit- if one wants to express it in such a way.
To draw the outward side is the easy part. It's the same like with all kind of portraits.

Total respect for what you show here !
There is an enormous amount of feelings in this self-portrait.
It makes me wondering what you're thinking . . .
It really makes me take the time and enjoy . . . more than just a drawing.

Thanks for the compliment and the kind words!^^
Being deep in thought is like reflecting the inner self and starting a spiritual journey- you are literally unapproachable in conversation
But sometimes it's just random and dim thoughts that flashes across the mind...
the goal is always some kind of epiphany!

The mind is an invisible presence attached to our visible forms, that’s what all kinds of authentic portraits should be about. I hate how many ‘self-portrait’s  today (as selfies, for example) are about cultivating your image/beauty. These self-portraits from people with inflated self-importance, who want to be seen, appreciated for their 'attractiveness' and put on course, are all about marketing yourself.

But yours is none of that. & I like it. It seems all very natural & unpretentious/unaffected to me. I like the pensive/interrogative mood in this self-portrait, your uncertainty.  I don’t trust people who have certitudes about everything in life.

Thank you for your kind words.

I totally agree with your statements: Wise people are free from the self-importance of spiritually empty people who brim over with ignorance.

Uncertainty is one thing i was trying to express as well as vulnerability.

Yes dear, I almost wrote the word vulnerability too, to describe this selfie. I think I've even typed the 2-3 first letters.

I like the sepia shading, proportions look good too. I wonder what you are thinking? Pondering life, the universe and everything? That less is more is a very good thing? Or what to have for dinner tonight?

It's cocktail of important and irrelevant thoughts buzz through the mind and rush to the fore without being asked.
And sometimes a thought is like a seed of a plant, which sprouts bears, blossoms and fruits. That's the point where a new artwork begins to exist- as an idea. ^^
