Hey DA community, Tony here. In early 2020 I, like a lot of people, found myself unemployed due to the pandemic shutdown. With all that free time, I decided to stop lurking around DA and start creating. I was inspired not only by the comics of my youth, but also by many of you who had, via analog and digital means, concocted whole worlds of great characters. Though a Daz dummy, I set about doing the same.

When I created my superheroine Djinni, I knew I was in for a fun, challenging task to tell her story in the weird not-quite-comics, not-quite-prose format I chose to work in. And I was also excited to have her interact non-canonically with some of the great characters I’d enjoyed here.

But one thing I noticed (and still do), is that few of the creators I follow actually put their characters in canonical stories. Despite giving their creations (and I’m not just referring to superhero types) very detailed and intriguing backstories, their OCs are mostly used in pinups, fetish shots, gag panels, and inside jokes amongst fellow creators.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with pin-ups, fetish shots, gag panels, and inside jokes, and if the case is that you primarily created your OCs to be chained-up, gassed, breast and body-modified, gender-swapped, giant-ized, tickled, turned into statues, hooked up to milking machines, eaten by beasties, sexually humiliated, etc., then, fine, ignore the rest of this. We only create for our own edification after all and there’s no value judgment here. I just find it a shame that so much thought and imagination ends up wasted on a character bio card but never expanded upon or explored.

Some of you don’t think of yourselves as writers. Well, obviously, you can tell amazing stories with just a few sequential images. You’ve created a great character with a great look and an amazing bio, don’t they deserve to walk through that world you invented? Does that mean a multi-chapter storyline? No. Does it have to be deadly serious? Hell no. But think of all the adventures - origins, first meetings, love stories, deadly battles - we’ve missed out on because a creator gets distracted by a new OC, a costume tweak, an art jam, etc.

Trust me, I know all too well the lure of fresh ideas (Golden Age heroines, anyone? Electra Woman and Dyna Girl?), the distraction of endless character creation/world building, and the amount of work involved with turning out an actual beginning-to-end story. But I find it worth it and think you would too.

None of this is admonishment and it’s not directed at anyone in particular. If anything, it’s a request from me, a fan of your creations, and a sincere compliment that I’m asking to see more of what you imagined.

Maybe if I phrased this better. What if I called this a “story jam?”…..
