Description

Both Alphys and Undyne often look back fondly on that day they first met. Not that either of their recollections bears the slightest resemblance to each other. Alphys recalls how a tall, dashing guard captain swept her off her feet and taught her how to live life again. Undyne remembers her childhood insecurities flooding back as she tried to compute the fact that a cute Monster was actually talking to her.

This was mostly an elaboration on my theory that Undyne was once a scrawny, socially awkward kid who became a badass warrior to hide her insecurities. After all, what was she doing skulking around a rubbish tip in the first place? She says she was there to pick up women, but when was the last time you found any knock out lookers hanging around a slag heap? (I tried it once and the only guy who was up for a shag was an old tramp with a beard that was 20% hair, 30% gin and 50% wood lice and flies)

It seems more like the behaviour of a socially awkward nerd who doesn't know how to talk to people than the smooth lady's gal Undyne tries to paint herself as. My take on it is that by this point she'd toughened up but was still uncomfortable around people, and perhaps her interactions with Alphys gave her the confidence to grow into the genuinely confident, assertive woman we seen in Undertale (Sadly it didn't diminish her urge to slaughter innocent children but nobody's perfect).
