Description
The early mist depicts yet another Avatar inspired image - You'll be pleased to note that this will be the last one of it's kind I'll be submitting. It's hard not to take inspiration from such a visually glorious film and all my jungles will be tainted by Pandora forever more but this is the last that has a very direct interpretation. These massive floating islands are tethered to the ground by vines which allow easy access to them by all non-flying inhabitants through gates (and a specific gate image can be found here - [link] ).
For a full list of assets used, please go here - [link]
I hope you like it and thanks for looking.
Software - Vue and Strata 3D

That is lovely, loved avatar too and did some art on Avatar, what program you used to build and render ?

Oh yeah - Avatar was a feast for the eyes for sure!
This image was entirely created in Vue Complete 8 except for the vine tethering the rock to the ground. The moss/ivy/weeds hanging from the vine are from Vue but the actual vine itself was made in my normal 3D editor (Strata 3D) - so it's 99.9% all Vue.
I would recommend giving it a go if you haven't already - the results put Bryce to shame and they have a cut down free version call Vue Pioneer [link]
This image creation differs from the Lonely Gate as the stone structure would have been modelled in a different program but it was a stock model from the Vue shop Cornucopia3D [link] (which is like the Content Paradise site for Poser - at Cornucopia3D you can buy models to use in the scene as well as extra plant species, materials, atmospheres etc)

The minimum requirements can be found here ([link] ) - but pretty much all newish computers & laptops would be able to run it happily.
A graphics card is not 'needed' but without it, it'll seem a little slugish while it tries to re-draw the scene for you as you add or change elements. Without a graphics card, it uses the main CPU to re-draw the screen so it's having to work a little harder on doing what the CPU needs to as well as displaying the OpenGL scene.
When it comes to rendering, this uses the CPU alone as it's all about the crunching of data while it accurately calculates the light including refections, refractions, caustics, etc. The more powerful the CPU, the quicker the scene renders.
A powerful CPU and a graphics card is the ideal setup but I use it on my MacBook which doesn't have a graphics card and uses a core2due CPU. Scene creation gets a little slow when I use loads of objects but it's quite nippy on basic scenes. Rendering takes time though - but I'm patient fortunately and the results are worth it.
A quick tip - The free Vue Pioneer adds a watermark to the lower right corner. All you need to do is to set the scene in such a way that once rendered, you can happily crop the whole lower section off the image which leaves you with no watermark.
My scenes were created using Vue Complete (along with certain content purchased from the Cornucopia3D shop (link again - [link] )) which is Vue Pioneer but with all the available modules added on. Buying all the modules separately costs more than if you buy the whole Vue Complete - but not all the modules need to be bought if you're not doing animation or using external 3D apps for instance. Let me know if you're thinking of getting more modules and I'll try and explain what they do and which are best as the choice can be a little daunting.
Cornucopia3D has a resource section that has short tutorials (and includes a walk through of my Curious Forest Dryad image) that are great to get you started.

Thank you, yup I think my notebook will be able to do something with it though even though it does not have the nvidia and ATI cards, as it has an Intel graphics chipset.

I look forward to some renders in that case.

looking better that fog helps a lot but i cant get the fact that it looks so flat for some reason.. don't get me wrong its great...I guess it depends if your going for realism or just making something in cg...

Unfortunately, fog and mist tends to make all objects loose the detail and contrast - but that's part of it's charm.
To tackle the loss of detail in this shot, I jumped over and made a mid-morning version here - [link]

Thank you very much - I appreciate the comment.
That damned Avatar movie makes me want to do jungles, jungles and more jungles with a side order of floating islands.

Makes me wonder where that waterfall is supplied from don't worry, I've done a floating island with waterfalls once too
this one has a nicer sense of scale and depth

Thanks - I'm glad you like it! I wanted to show the vastness of it and the mist worked well I think.
The waterfall is definitely an anomaly but it looks so damned good in everyone else's images, I couldnโt resist!

This is one of my favourite ones.
(although it's a shame about the graininess of the render!)

In some parts it doesn't look too bad, you should try to do some post work to reduce it.
