If you don't know what's happening here feel free to follow the link provided. I recommend starting at the start though. It's a very linear story.

As I have never felt the need to tape the girls down, this in particular did not happen to me, but I did learn the lesson of tight well worn shirts, old bras and dance practice. I did not live that moment down until I moved 400 miles away. On the plus side it did give me practical knowledge of gravity, the value of safety pins and that men will assist in anything if it involves boobs.

I does and then my sister in law goes and gives my chest the nick name "petal soft" Every man, woman, teenager and vague acquaintance feels (literally) like they have to verify the nick name.

And this in a long winded way is the reason I LOVE(in a strictly platonic, unless it swings that way, your comic). Your idea of what a larger woman looks like is realistic and sexy, your idea that woman come in different sizes and shapes and that all are sexy, to sound a little stupid, is actually revolutionary. I sent it to several of my friends just to prove beyond my husband that a woman that we look like can be considered sexy. You sir have no idea what joy you have brought this woman.

If you give something a testable name people will be compelled to do so...

There seems to be this accepted idea that there is one standard for beauty, that someone, somewhere, can tell everyone what beautiful is. I don't like that. I don't like being told I'm wrong when the point is subjective. I don't like being judged because of what I like.

Each of the girls has a following. Different people like them for different reasons. No one is wrong. They are all beautiful in their way.

I'm glad choosing to make Carol my lead empowered you. :]

ZootDingo In reply to Crave-The-Bullet [2010-07-31 01:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Making Carol your lead empowered me because she is a curvy red head with an attitude. We have a tendency to get bad reputations. But it was also that you found something beautiful in each girl, they are unique and yet they are not what society would accept as "Standard Beauty" and you did in such a way that each girl has a slavering following, yet none are negative to the other girls. I have no idea how you managed you, but you get more than kudos for that....Um whats more than kudos? It takes quite a bit for me to "approve" a piece of art when it comes to women, because most of what a geek like me sees is what is done in comics. And that is a rant that could take gigs of typing to even scratch the surface. So even though I am a woman in her prime on the unjust side of thirty I guess I could some up what I am trying to say with "ZOMG I LURV UR COMIX!!!11!"
But then again you can tell my predilections for the female form, I am a belly dancer, we like to see hip and rear ends and tummies, they make the dance so much more interesting to watch.

If there's one thing I like it's all the parts you mentioned.

Anyway, I just made the cast according to my standard of beauty, which is varied, so if nothing else I would be pleased. XD I'm always happy to find out that it's not just me who sees many sides of beauty.

All of the men in my group of friends are the same way. Though I will say will all this talk of physical beauty, you also made your women more real because of the their ticks, but none of them are stupid, or vapid. I know I sound like a blathering idiot know but I am just astounded, you are one off maybe 5 web comics with well written women and one of maybe 3 that have women of different shapes and sizes. Le Sigh....

I just make what I know. What few women have been my friends have been intellegent for the most part, but that holds true for the men too. There are stupid & vapid people in the world. I don't want to write about them though. XD You can write a stupid character well too. They have to act with a logic unique to their type. There's a difference between not being able to write a woman and writing one that is shallow. I think I can do both, but I guess that remains to be seen. XD

I know that what ever you decide to do, you will do it will.Though I would be sad to see such amazing talent used for such, unless it moved the story along. "Few Women" for someone that writes and draws women so well how could you only have a "few" female friends. I call shenanigans! And I am so very happy that you did not give the answer that Jack Nicholson did, in as good as it gets about writing women I might have cried . I can't wait to see what else is in store!
(Sorry about the nerd girl fandom )

Even characters with traits we don't like are essential to make a complete world. If we loved everyone it would seem artificial. The world needs Reggies unfortunately. XD

I've never seen that movie so I don't know what his response would be. I basically write women the same way I write men. In the end men and women want the same things. All the girl specific stuff I research to make sure I have a good idea of what the experience is like, and I listen to people.

Yeah, believe it or not I can count on one hand the number of girls I could really call a friend. I actually don't get along with women very well. As I often say, I'm better on paper than in practice. XD

ZootDingo In reply to Crave-The-Bullet [2010-08-03 14:09:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh I agree, I write in my off time and have written a few things, one is going into a comic book (it is a zombie love story...don't ask)so I understand the need for the antagonists. And in some poorly written stories I actually root for antagonists. I read way to much.

You should watch As Good As it Gets. It is one of the sweetest moves that I have ever seen Jack Nicholson in. But that is only my humble opinion.

What makes you say you don't get along with women? You seem to be doing fine typing to me, and last I checked all the bits were in place. Although I will admit you are bit clinical, I can't tell if that is simply " Mr.Webcomic Writer Guy " person to keep things professional or if it is actually...you. Then again you could just be getting sick and tired of writing to the pesty woman, and too polite to say. A number of fascinating possibilities. I would be sad of course if you just thought I was annoying, but honestly you can just say. "Dude, go AWAY, I have stuff I have to do!" That is a perfectly OK response.

I find it interesting that you write women and men essentially the same and yet you can tell the girl characters "voice" from the boy's. And I am almost afraid to ask how you research the girl specific stuff. I said almost so.. seriously.. do you google it?

I am a chick and for a long time I could count on one hand the number of girl friends I had. I am overly honest, I am a bit of an over achiever and I am a girl in what is still considered the boy's club. Table top gaming. I may as well get my mark now because that makes me a pariah to 90-95% of the population (with a 5% margin of error). I dig it. The call of shenanigans is still in play. Perhaps more women considered you a friend than you them.

(Irish and stubborn)

Every time I try to reply to this something happens...

Um, I don't know exactly why I don't get along with women. They just tend to have more characteristics I won't suffer. If you get right down to it I don't get along with many people for long stretches of time. I'm hard to tolerate. It's hard to explain. If you get along with me you get along with me really well but if you don't then you hate me. There's not a lot of gray area. Even if you're my friend I wear on you, like water over stones. Slowly breaking you down with my relentless quirks.

I guess you'll just have to take my word for it or try to become my friend and see how it goes. Many have tried. Few have succeeded... X3

Anyway, I try to give every character unique voices, while keeping an over arching style to the speech. So it seems like they come from the same area if they do and if they don't I try to reflect that in word choice.

I research girl specific experiences by reading, asking questions, and listening. Even when I was very little I listened to conversations and memorized things. Since I was raised by women I learned women centric things a lot of the time. Mostly people assumed that because I wasn't looking directly at them I wasn't hearing, but I did. In fact, that's how I was in school too. If you read enough, and can empathize reasonably well, you can get a pretty solid grasp of anyone else's experiences.

It all probably seems contradictory to preach the value of friendship, but be so closed to people, but it works on the inside somehow. I don't think about it too much anymore. Maybe there were girls that thought of me as a friend that I didn't. I can't say. I think the reverse was true many times too, but I won't tolerate the game very long.

I have dealt with lots and lots of hard to tolerate people. I am told I like people too much and forgive more than I should. Everyone has relentless quirks. Helllloooo Gamer Girl and Star Trek TNG nerd, band geek, pick your poison I am a nerd. And I mean that in the truest fashion, not only do I game of all sorts, table top some console and computer (ZOMG Diablo 3!) But I have volunteered at conventions from San Diego Comicon down to small local cons, oh and did I mention I was a bellydancer, and dressed pretty much like the girls in the pictures. I have taught bellydance at gaming conventions and even made a little area where girls could come to on their time off to get away from the relentless quirks. Seriously, if you bath at least every other day, can communicate in English (My Klingon is rusty), have the basic social skills to keep your hands off my breasts if I happen to wear a low cut blouse (that privilege comes with time), we are golden. One of my best friends as Auburgers. Fairly badly, but he could play the mandolin like you wouldn't believe, the guy was a musical savant, he could hold just about any fact in his head, so you learn to be corrected.
Just sounds like you are hanging out around the wrong set of women. Or people. My hubby is an artist. And has all the quirks and weird things that go along with being an artist. I know 2 people who ARE IMDB. One of my good friends is a published writer, she has a trilogy under fantasy. On a given day I can hang out with dancers, costumers, writers, artists, photographers, musicians, movie makers, actors, gamers, the list goes on. The best I can say is....Bring it On. (and not the horrid movie) give me your worst. Let me judge on my own.
