Description
One really neat thing about Zion National Park is how much the scenery can change from one place to another. As you drive from the canyon section of the park and then go up a road through the mountains and climb a 800ft switchback then you go through a 1 mile tunnel thats goes straight through a mountain, and all of a sudden the landscape just completly changes. The rock formation in this area of the park are just amazing. There is just so much detail that everything just feels olmost fake. I really cant explain it, you just have to experince it for yourselfThis is one of my first shots of this area, and one of my favs

i love how my eyes just so easily follow the lines in this piece. b/w is very suiting, and whats the luck with the tree? adds an additional spark of interest. very cool

Trully outstanding composition. The textures are absolutely wonderful, and I am impressed how the 10D reacted so well to such a repetitive pattern, so easy to create moirΓ© patterns.
Brilliant photo indeed, congratulations!

I was going to go to Zion National Park last summer, but ended up changing my mind and went to Maine (b/c of the distance, I live in Michigan)...but I really hope to go there someday...this shot is awesome

Whoa that is an awesome pattern in the rock. The touch of the tree in the top right just really finishes off the picture +fav

good choice with b&w, it really brings out the textures and details from the rock.
I really like the tight cropping on the top.

The B&W really bring out the textures in this photo. I love how the sediment/rock layers sweep in an upward motion because it serves to function as a means to draw our eyes up; up to the top, where there, we find a lone tree. The viewer can visually "climb" to the top using this natural staircase to guide our eyes.

The b/w couldn't have brought out the amazing textures any better. That lone tree is the perfect garnish. Fabulous contrasts. I'm finally getting to your shots, Mark. That took a while.

Wow, more and more of these pictures I see from both you and Mike makes me wish I didnt live so far.
Great shot. This reminds me of Ansel Adams. Theres so much life in this picture. The texture of the rocks and that singular tree is really beautiful. Someone had told me today, that he believed the best pictures in the world tell a story, that portrayed an essence and would change the way he sees the world. And you've always been able to do that, with every single piece I have been lucky enough to see. I will always remember that when I see your work.

Excellent job. I don't think I've ever taken anything in B&W where a blasted out sky actually worked towards the advantage of the composition. What you've done here works beautifully to highlight and draw attention to the silhouette of the tree at the top and to counterbalance the darkness of the rock. You've captured the sedimentary layers so well that this would be a nice photo for a geology book as well

great textures. i like the contrast of the shape/texture of the rock with the tree. the white sky makes it work.
