Description
EDIT: 3/26/12I discovered I genuinely have no clue what the hell I'm doing when I color. I wanted to shade her, and it took me months to figure out how I colored her in the first place, and could not match what I had done. Finally figured out I colored her skin twice in order to approximate her true shade. >_<
Anyway, shaded at last.
Rayne is a Digimon I play in a Digimon RP with my sister.
Story Info:
Once serving as the goddess of the Net Seas, Ranamon was captured by the vile Reapermon and forced into serving the villainous Digimon Tamer, Sansung in his desire to destroy the Digidestined.
Under his command, she ended up running against the Digidestined Max, and his Technamon, Tekla.
Sensing that she fights against her will, Max routinely pulled his punches, and refused to harm her.
And when Max was about to meet his demise against Sansung's strongest digimon, Sangloupmon, Ranamon finally found the strength to defy her master and came to his rescue.
And a new digivice was born, forever linking Max and Ranamon.
He named her Rayne, and filled with a renewed sence of hope, and love and admiration for her new tamer, Rayne found that she could now digivolve into the beautiful Mermaimon, and was forever free from having to return to the monsterous and uncontrolable Calmaramon.
Thus, Rayne has a very unique Digivolution line, unlike typical Ranamon.

Also, I finally realized why I'm so obsessed with Rarity, from MLP:FiM. She has virtually the exact same personality as my Rayne.

Kind of strange to see only the gems with shadows and highlights. Any reason why?

Well, I explained it all in the info section (granted not in extreme detail).
I had planned on doing this whole series in Prismacolor pencils, but Ranamon threw that completely out.
She's deceptively complex: [link]
I laid down her gem and eye colors, then spent an hour on trying to replicate her skin color alone. And another half hour trying to replicate her blues. And could not even get close to either.
I finally gave up and looked at my prisma markers, and noticed they were close enough. She still would look off, but not wrong.
Once I identified the colors I wanted to use, I turned the already inked copy with the colored gems into a test subject. I decided I liked how the two looked together. Kinda like the gems were glowing with a mysterious power source.
But the gems are shaded because they're pencil, and I can do that with pencil. Had planned the entire piece to be so. I can't shade/highlight with markers (at least, not yet).

You could use GIMP to recolor her.

Just suggesting a cheap (~*free*~) alternative. Considering you don't own the right colors to properly render the character (as you said), and that you can create any color you'd ever need in an art program, I'd think you'd be more open to the idea. You come across as really pissy sometimes.

Well, I don't have money for a tablet. I have photoshop, and I've tried playing with it, and I can't get the hang of using a mouse.
I also don't have a connection fast enough to download any new programs. It took two days to DL an *update* for my Norton.
I also feel that physical production of art is, for lack of a better term, a dying artform. Instead of running to digital so I can copy her colors exactly, I'd rather keep practicing and trying to perfect the real piece.
I'm sorry if you think I have a bad attitude, because I didn't intend one.
I'm also sorry if you feel not jumping onto a medium that has no interest to me is close minded.
For the record, I did think when I finished it "If I had a tablet, it wouldn't be anything to have copied her colors." Then I also realized it wouldn't have been any fun, either. I wouldn't have a piece I could be proud of.

You don't need a tablet to color digitally. I was using a mouse only until recently. My wife bought my tablet in '04, I think. I had been using a mouse up until that point since '98. It may just take more practice to get used to it. There are plenty of great artists out there that still use a mouse.
If your internet connection is that bad, I can burn GIMP onto a CD and then mail it to you. Actually, now that I think about it, I have Photoshop 6.0 on a disc that I can lend you.
And I didn't mean to say that you were being close minded, it just came across as though you were resigned to failure and were content with it, for whatever reason. I just wanted to help you solve some of the problems that you seem to be having.
I do disagree with you about the physical production of artwork being a dying form of art, though. I'll just leave it at that, though.
Cheers, Jetty.

Heh. The copy of photoshop I have is 6.0. I also don't mean that it's impossible to work with a mouse. Just that *I* can't get the knack of it no matter how much I practice.
And I'm never "resigned to failier." At least not with a coloring. I may resign myself to temporary failing after an hour and a half of work with nothing to show for it. But it only makes more determined to figure it out. If I can't make it work with the colors that I have, I may go out and search for the tools I need to do it right.
I finished this so that I can have something to show for the effort, and at some point, I'll go out looking for additional pencils to help me get ther. That may be in a couple days, or that may be sometime next year. But at the moment, I have more important issues to deal with. "Close" is good enough for now, until I can deal with it properly.
Hell, I still tinker with the colors with ten year old drawings, as I continue to look for the "perfect colorscheme." ^_^
It is my hobby. Unlike most artists, I draw and color for myself. Drawing causes me frustraition and stress, but the coloring is what I enjoy, and can help de-stress me. Even when I hit something frustraiting like her, I still enjoy the challenge, and don't concider it a stressful type of frustraiting.
Thanks for the offer on Gimp, but I don't think I'd find it terribly useful. I only have one piece I want to color digitally, and that's only to spare my markers and pencils.
